hiii! I created this topic to see if any of the catholic girls here are preparing for confirmation as I am!

I’m neither a girl nor being confirmed ( I already am), but I will pray a rosary for you and your confirmation class!! How exciting! Confirmation deepens our union with Christ, the mission of His church, and it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us. :)

I really appreciate the prayers! I'm very excited as well! I feel so at peace every time I go to church and I'm happy that my confirmation will make that feeling even stronger

Congrats on your upcoming confirmation!! I'm already confirmed also, but I'll definitely pray for you and your classmates. When is your confirmation date? I feel like this sacrament is sometimes misunderstood, but it's so beautiful. Hang on to your relationship with Christ - sometimes the other side of confirmation can be a wild ride, but it's all manageable as long as we hold on to Him <3

I'm not Catholic, what is a confirmation? Is it like a baptism?

I don't know why I can't reply to specific comments, but this is answering Elisia's question. So, after a few years of reciving your First Communion, you do your confirmation. It's a Catholic sacrament where you recieve the Holy Spirit, like the 12 apostles did during a day called Whitsun (english is not my first language so correct me if I'm wrong). Anyway, this sacrament makes your relationship with God deeper and stronger.

@Elisia see Acts 8:14-17 for a biblical example of Confirmation :) There you can see a distinction between Confirmation and Baptism. The people of Samaria had already been baptized, but didn’t receive the Holy Spirit until the Apostles Peter and John had prayed for them and “laid their hands on them.”

@Elisia, yes, Pentecost is the English word! I believe some Protestant denominations have a kind of Confirmation also, but it's not a sacrament the way it is in the Catholic Church (others, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). A Bishop still does the laying on of hands as the physical "sign" of the sacrament, just like in Acts, and anoints the person being confirmed with blessed oil (which smells really nice lol). Usually the person has a "sponsor" also, who is a confirmed adult who has helped guide them in their faith life. Where I live in the US people are usually confirmed when their 17-18, but I think technically anyone who has been baptized in the Catholic church can be confirmed with permission, even if they're younger.

Edit: I just googled, and I see that Whitsun is used in the UK, so I guess it's English too? Whoops (:

Yea, I'm non-denominational, so we just have a baptism when you feel like you want to promise to follow God for the rest of your life. At my church your greatest mentor (whether that be a parent or pastor) usually baptizes you. Maybe some other denominations have Confirmations, but not my church.

In my experiences at protestant churches, the Holy Spirit is received at the same time a person receives Jesus as their Savior. In some churches they are then immediately baptized or they spend time learning about faith and baptism and are baptized after that. Most of my experience is with immersion baptism, but not all protestant churches use immersion. Some do infant baptism that reflects Old Testament circumcision, but not salvation. There are many variations!😊

Usually what people do to indicate who they are replying to is to start their reply with the @ symbol and then the person’s name, like I did to reply to you. Yeah, you have to use the desktop version of Goodreads to respond to specific comments. Unfortunately you can't do so when using the app.

In Catholicism, it can be both :) We don't believe that the intrinsic nature of baptism is changed by whether or not you're immersed in water or have the water poured over your head. When baptizing babies, the later is easier and safer. We believe all baptisms are valid as long as they're done using the trinitarian formula, i.e., "in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit."

So, in my church, baptism is when you accept the Holy Spirit into your life, but a baby can't really accept the Holy Spirit, right? So is a Confirmation like accepting the Holy Spirit for you guys?

Pretty much. we receive baptism as children, receiving the grace of the holy spirit (and to receive the life of Christ in our Souls, as we have no life within us until we have received this Grace). additionally, it is the patents and the Godparents oath to raise the child in the faith. to teach them and nurture them. children receive confirmation as a taking on of the responsibility of their faith, and a receiving the gifts to do that (the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.)

a teacher of mine gave the analogy of Baptism as getting a brand new car, and Confirmation as turning on the engine, if that is helpful in understanding at all.

oh, I had Confirmation last summer! And also after Confirmation, a few weeks later i think, i really accepted Jesus Christ in my heart as my Lord and Saviour!! i stopped being a lukewarm Christian and now I can say that I'm so happy!!

I'm going to be confirmed in the spring. as a confirmation saint I want Bl. Carlo Acutis but that didn't work out because he's a bl. So Jacinta instead.

I’m so late to this lol, but I’m catholic and I’m getting confirmed May 1!!! For everyone else who is/was getting confirmed, what grade did you have it in? I moved this summer and wasn’t expecting to be confirmed until Sophomore year of highschool, but at my new school they do it in eight grade. Also, if you guys picked saints, who did you choose?

as for my Saint, like I said above I wanted bl. carlo acutis but since he's a bl. I wasn't allowed to so instead I chose Saint Jacinta Marto.:)
