FOUR AUSPICIOUS BEASTS (Four Guardians/Symbols) - February Mini Challenge

This is an optional mini challenge for our UNO players.
The Four Auspicious Beats are mythological creatures among the Chinese constellations along the ecliptic, and viewed as the guardians of the four cardinal directions. They are

- the Azure Dragon of the East,
- the Vermilion Bird of the South,
- the White Tiger of the West, and
- the Black Tortoise of the North.

Each of the creatures is most closely associated with a cardinal direction and a color, but also additionally represents other aspects, including a season of the year, an emotion, virtue, and one of the Chinese "five elements" (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water).*

We need them on our side to bring peace, prosperity and protection and we can evoke them by reading books.

◈ Every book read, i.e. every task completed, is worth 10 points, with the exception of specific tasks (where different points are assigned, they are mentioned in the tasks). Each book can be used for one task only.
◈ Books for tasks can be finished in any order. No need to complete blocks to get the 10 points/book.
◈ If your team completes the first 40 tasks, you get 30 points as bonus. If you also complete the extra tasks (5th set - 6 tasks), the bonus is 40 points.

◈ Books can be started at any point since the start of the UNO challenge (Feb 1)
◈ Books need to be finished after the start of this mini challenge on Feb 14, 9am UTC https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown... and before March 1 at 9am UTC (when the March UNO month begins).

◈ Books used for this mini challenge do not need to be separate books from what you are claiming for your UNO hands
◈ The usual book length rules apply
◈ Team spreadsheets will be updated with a mini challenge tab so that you can track your books and claim your points

UNO Pixie | 1839 comments possible FAQs

- colorur %: the usual, more-than-50% UNO rule applies
- colour letters on the cover: it has to be more than 1 letter with the given colour
- 2. teal cover: Remember those discussions in the dedicated thread where we could not agree if a cover was bluish-green or greenish blue? This is the chance for those covers to shine! ;) (view spoiler)
- 10. book where a character is guarding somebody/something: it can be a person or object they are guarding or something more metaphorical like a secret, etc.
- tasks where you need a word in text/title/series title: plural form is always accepted, as well as the words in whichever languages you are reading the book
- 20. character flying: can be pilot or passenger, the whole book does not need to be set aboard, but flying/travelling must occur at one point
24. Read a book with the publication date (the first publication date or that of your edition) containing the number 4: April counts as "4"
- 35. book featuring a bird/snake/turtle etc.: We intend to be fairly flexible on this. So if the old aunt in the story has a bird that turns up more than once, b/c it needs to be fed or is troublesome or gets lost, it is fine already. If a character mentions that their relative have a bird/snake/turtle or they have a fear of these animals, but these do not actually turn up in the book in any other way, it is a NO.
- 42. alien species: from space/another planet
- 43. animal constellations: Will accept "monster" and fictional animals like "unicorn", "Pegasus" or "phoenix" from the list, but NOT Centaur. In case it is multiple words like "sea serpent" or "little dog", the name of the animal by itself is accepted. Plural also counts.
- 46. martial art of Asian origin:The wiki link is not exclusive, just there to help. If you know of any other martial arts of Asian origin, feel free to use that.
- Tasks 8, 18, 28, 38: for spring/summer/fall/winter months we will accept both the Northern/Southern hemisphere equivalents depending on your location. (e.g.: Dec/Jan/Feb will be accepted both as winter or summer months depending on where you are from, etc. :)
