Ann Happy Friday everyone! Time for our weekly check-in for the end of week nine. Did everyone get at least one book finished this week to stay on pace? If not there's still plenty of time to catch up!

I actually haven't quite finished one yet this week but I'm a few ahead so it'll work out. I'm about half way through NOS4A2. I've also almost finished The Best Horror of the Year, Volume Six. Not sure which prompts I'm using these for as they both work with numerous ones.

There's a new poll up in the "poll" section and featured at the bottom of the home page. Be sure to cast your votes!

What books did you read this week? While your recapping you week also answer this weeks get-to-know-you question: What is your favorite genre to read? Mine is either Mystery/thriller or YA Dystopian usually.

Happy reading everyone!

Brandy B (bybrandy) | 260 comments Slid my week 8 comment in apparently seconds before the thread closed. Go me.

In week 9 I only got one book finished. The short stories category really killed my momentum for two weeks in a row.

I read Almost Famous Women a fictionalization of women who weren't quite as famous as they were maybe poised to be. Many times the stories were more about the people surrounding these women.

I liked some of the stories a lot. Others I liked less. I found the collection uneven. But I often do in short story collections.

I don't know if I found it slow going. The stories, in my opinion, tended towards the melancholy due to all of these women's lives not quite working out as they planned.

But it might have been the lack of continuing narrative that slowed me down. I felt no drive to get on to the next story, the way I would the next chapter in a novel.

Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments This week I started and finished Mary Coin, which I really enjoyed. I am using it for "a book based entirely on its cover."

Of late, my favorite genre tends to be literary fiction or memoirs.

message 4: by Lüdi (new)

Lüdi A book based on a true story: This Blinding Absence by Tahar Ben Jelloun
A book you can finish in a day: Where She Went by Gayle Forman
A book with bad reviews: The Book of Tomorrow by Cecelia Ahern
A book set in the future: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
A book that became a movie: Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier
A funny book: Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
A book published this year: I Was Here by Gayle Forman
A book with a one-word title: Fairest by Marissa Meyer
A pulitzer-prize winning book: To Kill a A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
A book by an author you've never read before: All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
A book that was originally published in another language: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
A banned book: Lolita by Vladimir Nabokav
A book based or turned into a TV show: M*A*S*H by Richard Hooker
A book over 500 pages long: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbook
Total: 14/50
I'm currently reading Winesburg, Ohio to cross off a book set in my hometown and Daughter of Smoke of Bone to start crossing off the trilogy challenge.
My favorite genre is, by far, contemporary.

message 5: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Johnson (michellecurates) | 85 comments I'm on book 9, so I'm a little behind. I dont know why I'm struggling to get through Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. It's really interesting. And I LOVE biographies.

And that's the answer to the question. My favorite genre is biographies.

message 6: by Heidi (last edited Mar 07, 2015 10:50AM) (new)

Heidi (heidi28) This week I finished Through the Zombie Glass. I used this as my book with a love triangle (possibly a slight stretch, but there we go).

I'm currently reading Northanger Abbey (classic romance). I found the first half hard going and I was going to take a break from it, but now it seems like a totally different book and I'm enjoying it.

I'm also about to finish my audio book of Great Expectations. When listening to it on my way to work the other day I was very close to tears, so I'm counting this as a book that made me cry (seen as I've only cried at 2 books before!)

I've now completed 11 so am 2 ahead of target.

I always miss out the question...
My favourite genres are probably crime/thrillers and dystopian right now. I find I am reading a wider range of genres than I used to though, and I'm attempting to read roughly a classic a month.

message 7: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (kiik) | 158 comments This week I completed Love's Executioner by Irvin Yalom, which was fantastic. I've been struggling a bit through other books, but I've managed to stay on track so far. I think I just need a good YA to get me excited again. On that note, dystopian and fantasy YA is definitely my favourite genre.

message 8: by Cate (new)

Cate (catelam) | 56 comments At the very beginning of the week I finished Big Little Lies and today I finished listening to Yes Please. I also read Since You've Been Gone (book written by a female author). I think I've read 25 books so far, so nearly halfway there!

message 9: by Lynn (last edited Mar 08, 2015 03:18AM) (new)

Lynn (lynnali) I checked off:
A book with a number in the title: Around the World in Eighty Days
A book that made you cry: Love in Sight
and I read Heart of a Soldier, but I'm not sure where to put it. I finished it in a day, so I could move the one I have there, but I'm not inclined to do that. I think I'll keep this one in reserve in case I need it later.

Edited to answer question: I'd say my favorite genres are mysteries or fiction, veering towards the chick lit end, but not straight chick lit.

message 10: by Alycia (new)

Alycia | 65 comments I've been reading alot this week, but haven't finished anything yet. But I have read 16 books so far, so I'm on track.
My favorite genres are YA (doesn't have to be dystopian, but all the better if it is!), literary fiction, and fantasy. And I'm a sucker for a good time-travel novel!

message 11: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I completed my funny book this week, Stuff Christians Like. I'm working on Gone Girl...slowly. Sometimes I like this book and other times it drags on too much. I'm over half through so I'm not sure if it will ever get easier to read at this point...
I'm not sure what my favorite genre is. I like chick lit for its witty light heartedness. I like current bestselling fiction that has been well researched and tackles a big social issue or a past social issue. What is that genre called?

Have you read Feed by Mira Grant? It's one of those books I just have to recommend to anyone who likes YA dystopian books. Grant builds a believable world with an extremely good female lead.

message 14: by Beth (new)

Beth I finished two books last week: Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail and The Penelopiad. Originally, I was going to use Wild as my "book with antonyms in the title", but I've decided to move it to "book that made me cry". I've currently listed The Penelopiad as "book by female author", but I may slot it in somewhere else later on.

I'm on track with 14 books read this year. My goal for March is 16, so I'm halfway there.

I am currently reading NOS4A2 ("scary book"), The Spymistress: A Novel ("book chosen based on cover"), and Big Bang: The Origin of the Universe ("non-fiction book").

I enjoy most genres, but I am particularly fond of books about history and biographies of historical figures. And I love a good mystery :)

message 15: by Keri (new)

Keri (keri91) | 13 comments I FINALLY finished "A Book That was Released in the Year You Were Born," I read Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and it took me 10 days, unfortunately. So only one this week, though I am reading A Study in Scarlet for my "Book With a Color in the Title" and will probably finish by tomorrow... so I guess two! Once finished, I'll have read 10 books this year!

Ann - I haven't read it, but have heard some great things about the series in this group. Thanks for the recommendation - it is definitely going on my TBR list!
