PattyMacDotComma Six Ostriches is the next in Philipp Schott's Canadian vet mystery series. I enjoyed it without knowing anything about the previous book, Fifty-Four Pigs. It's an entertaining mix of ancient Icelandic sagas, cults, sacrifices... and ostriches.

A dull cover, but shines brightly on all other counts. Good for readers and writers of all colours.

Leslie | 16369 comments I have finished Tobacco Road by Erskine Caldwell. I gave it 3* but I didn't really like it very much... it wasn't the writing but the content with which I had issues. I explained (briefly) what the problems were in my review:

I think I'll avoid that one based on your review. I like many depressing and bleak books, but I generally dislike books written from a philosophically bleak worldview.

Finished Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. At first it was a little slow, but it picked up halfway through, and I ended up quite liking it

Pretty good if you treat it as a YA Fantasy than an adult fantasy.

PattyMacDotComma I was pretty sure that The Bullet That Missed would actually hit the mark. Of course I enjoyed Richard Osman's unusual Thursday Murder Club of elderly sleuths. Wonderful characters, actual danger.

Assumed it to be an adult sci-fi read, but it turned out to be a middle-grade sci-fi. Nevertheless, very entertaining and thought-provoking.

A well-written family drama set around a crime mystery. Slow paced but worth it.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Medea: A Modern Retelling by Christa Wolf, translated from the German by John Cullen.
Wolf recasts Medea as a compassionate healer who is blamed for crimes she did not commit. She uses the myth as a vehicle for political commentary, demonstrating the extent to which people will go to hold on to power, including scapegoating and othering those who look different. I thought the retelling was excellent.

PattyMacDotComma Aussie author Kerry Greenwood's popular Phryne Fisher murder mystery series continues with #6, Blood and Circuses, which sees Phryne disguised as a circus trick rider. A lady of many talents! Who knew?

PattyMacDotComma A Company of Laughing Faces is a curious and moving short story by South African Nadine Gordimer, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991. In this, she captures the mixed feelings of a 17-year-old girl being pushed by her mother into the company of other young people.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments I read Norwegian by Night by Derek B. Miller.
An unusual mix of a crime novel; a chase across scenic Norway; Kosovor war criminals on the hunt; a veteran's haunting memories of war; and a delightful, eighty-year-old curmudgeonly grandfather prone to hallucinations and talking to ghosts as its central figure.

Leslie | 16369 comments Phrynne - I'll have to start skipping your posts if I don't want my TBR list to explode!! I'm glad to see you are enjoying the Bruno mysteries by Walker - I have read all of them and love the way Bruno fits into his community, the food & coaching & everything. Plus the mysteries often have a social commentary aspect that I appreciate.

I haven't kept up with V.I. Warshawski so I didn't realize Paretsky was up to book #21! I read the first 10-12 so I guess I have a lot to catch up on.

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished a couple of books recently:

Effi Briest by Theodore Fontane, 3*
Reminded me a bit of the little I read of Madame Bovary (which I abandoned). Not really my cup of tea but an interesting look at late 19th century German society.

Killer's Wedge by Ed McBain, 3.5*
Two major plot lines - one was a typical case (Carella investigating a supposed suicide) and one quite unusual (the squadroom being held hostage by a grief-crazed widow with a gun and some nitroglycerin).

The Complete Maus by Art Speigelman, 5*
A graphic novel depicting the life of the author's father in Poland before and during WW2 interspersed with current (when written in the 1970s) interactions between the author & his father.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson, 4*
Audiobook edition. Such fun! Miss Pettigrew is the product of a Victorian upbringing in a C of E parsonage, now eking out a living as a governess in 1930s England, when she stumbles into the life of a frivolous wanna-be actress with too many 'boyfriends'.

PattyMacDotComma The Girl in the Ice, by Robert Bryndza, is the first book in his popular Detective Erika Foster series. It's hard to believe it was the author's debut novel. Great read, with six more to follow.

The Case of the Famished Parson by George Bellairs, 3.5*

The Puzzle of the Red Stallion by Stuart Palmer, 3*

Both were good mysteries but nothing extraordinary.
