I started this one early. It was full of suspense, danger and mystery with an exotic hero thrown in. I did not find the romance particularly believable - but I still enjoyed the book. Putney certainly knows how to fill a novel with angst and I was interested enough to want to know how it ended to keep reading.
Overall - a 4 star read for me. I would recommend it for others, particularly those who like an epic tale.

Susan, I agree that Putney knows how to fill a novel with angst. I am feeling it and will put the last half of this book on hold until at least tomorrow.

I really liked Susan as well. I love how strong she is and has strong common senses
the Vilian is downright evil. I kept hoping I was wrong about what the man did. do to Peregrine. Sadly .. I was right.
I really enjoyed the story. The Seducer is still my favorite but this book was close.

I like the H and h but at this point I don't feel the chemistry in their scenes together. Feels more like I'm being led to understand by the author that they have chemistry, but again just not actually feeling it from the writing.
Meanwhile I'm really interested in the relationship between H, Peregrine, and h's fiance Charles - he seems like such an awful person I'm really intrigued. What all has he been getting up to? The author is definitely making a good case for why Lady Sarah needs to be relieved of this engagement!
Also liked some of the historical context, such as discussion about business investments in the railroad and the brothel tour (though some of the latter was depressing to think about).

I enjoy Mary Jo Putney's stories. This was darker than most. Charles was so evil! How could he be blind to all the innocence he destroyed? In addition to no good character, do you think he had syphilis and it was impacting his mind?
The narrator was good. It might have made the story even better for me.

Synopsis:
He called himself Peregrine, and like the falcon he was wild and free. He was superbly handsome, fabulously wealthy, overwhelmingly seductive. He cut a dazzling swath through Victorian London—and wove a web of desire around beautiful and proud Lady Sara St. James, pledged to wed another man.
In Peregrine's arms Sara learned the meaning of forbidden passion—and forbidding mystery. Only the burning power of love could pierce Peregrine's chilling silence about his secret past and hidden purpose...as Sara plunged into a whirlpool of yearning and uncertainty with a man who was everything a woman could want or fear...
Happy reading!
