Voices of the Dead (Raven, Fisher and Simpson #4) by Ambrose Parry

A very nice addition to the series, but to fully appreciate it, it's better to start with the first one in the series. I've been a fan since that first one!

James Best (jamesbest) | 121 comments Now about 1/4 of the way through CITY OF DREAMS by Don Winslow, the second novel in his planned crime fiction trilogy where both the characters and storylines parallel those of The Iliad and The Aeneid.

In the author's trilogy (which is expected to be his swan song) the Irish and Italian mobs in Providence, Rhode Island during the 1980s and 90's substitute for the Trojans and Greeks. It makes for some great reading so far.

James Best (jamesbest) | 121 comments Going a bit retro this week with THE FOURTH PROTOCOL by Frederick Forsyth. I haven't read a Forsyth book in several years and this one, published back in 1984, was adapted into a movie in 1987 starring Michael Caine and Pierce Brosnan. My wife really liked the movie, so I relented and picked up a paperback copy to sample.

message 83: by James (new)

James Best (jamesbest) | 121 comments Now starting INDEPENDENCE SQUARE by Martin Cruz Smith. This is his latest hardcover release (and tenth novel overall) featuring Moscow homicide investigator Arkady Renko, who made his debut way back in 1981's GORKY PARK.

Smith was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease way back in 1995 but kept it hidden from his editors and publishers for many years. I hope he continues to crank out the Renko books as his health will allow.

message 93: by James (new)

James Best (jamesbest) | 121 comments Now starting FIXIT by Joe Ide, the sixth novel in his ongoing series featuring amateur private eye Isaiah Quintabe.

The first book in the series (IQ) was one of the best debut mystery novels I had ever read. The follow on novels have been anywhere from solid reads to very good, but none have quite matched the sizzle of the first novel... We will see how this new one stacks up.
