Hello, I'm looking for a book that I read many years ago, (like over ten years ago I do not remember the exact year, maybe 2007 sorry), and it was more like a collection of stories similar to like the Grimm fairytales. I have no idea about the name of the publisher or author.
The main story I remember from it is about a girl named Prudence, her mother has died and she only has her father. Somehow she wants to marry the King, or her father wants her to marry the King, and so she is taken to the palace. The King gives her 3 trials, each trial is him locking her in a room with a large number of animals intending to kill her - first night was birds that he intended would claw and bleed her to death, forgotten the second animal group, but the third was a pride of lions. Each time Prudence managed to 'tame' the animals and survive, and the King is surprised to see her alive each morning, and at the end he marries her.
I apologise for this being so old and not very detailed, but I have honestly searched for this story/book everywhere with no luck! When I originally read it, I was still in primary school (UK), and I'm almost thirty years old now! It was a book loaned from school so I didn't get to keep it, and only remember these details now.
This thread is my last hope, if no one can help from here either, I will write and publish this as a book myself LOL
The Practical Princess and Other Liberating Fairy Tales by Jay Williams has a story called 'The Silver Whistle' with a heroine called Prudence, and there is a lion, but the story is different to what you describe. At one point a wizard sets her a challenge of keeping him alive overnight and one of his requirements is that he needs to be kept warm. Prudence has a magic whistle and it summons a lion, who chases the wizard and this keeps him warm and alive until morning. Mentioning it just in case, as I haven't been able to find any other stories with lions and a girl called Prudence!
