Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4791 comments Published in 1993, Point of Impact revolves around Bob Lee "Bob the Nailer" Swagger. After serving as a Marine sniper in Vietnam with 87 confirmed kills, Swagger received a career-ending Injury and has retired to Blue Eye, Arkansas. Bob Lee's unique set of skills have gone unmatched on the battlefield.

He is approached by representatives of Accutech Inc who want him to recreate shooting situations using their high tech ammo. He knows something is off and eventually confronts their leader, retired Colonel Schreck. He has no interest until they tell him that the Soviet agent who ended his military career is planning to assassinate the President. They give him another test. He's asked to line up a shot at the President, not to actually take him out, just to see if it can be done. He does it and tells them how, when and where it can be done. When an actual shot is fired and the President goes down, he's the obvious suspect.

Nick Memphis is an FBI agent who is tasked with capturing Bob Lee, Nick was once a sniper too until he tried to take out a criminal who was holding several women hostage. But he missed the shot and paralyzed a hostage whom he eventually married. His experience tells him things aren't adding up and forms an alliance with him.

There's an overload lot of firearms details, if you are unfamiliar with high tech ballistics information. The characters, plot and courtroom finale will more than make up for it. As he hunts for the men that set him up the tension ratchets up.

There are multiple characters and plenty of action. The story is fast moving with a high-energy, well-plotted story that isn't always headed where you think it is. I read a couple of books in the series back in the 90's and forgot how much I loved that All American Hero Bob Lee Swagger. I will definitely add a couple more to my TBR. I understand there's a movie based on this novel called "The Shooter". It's been set in more of a current time period. I think it's fairly different from the book so I might check it out sometime to see the differences.
