Kelly | 106 comments It was a lot less scary than I was hoping it to be and a lot less in the splatterpunk genre than I was looking for. For such a short story it is such a large buildup. It seems like it’s the last twenty pages that are action packed and even then it’s sometimes difficult to know what is going on. I think it might’ve been the writing style that made it hard for me to follow along with what was going on but I am willing to check out some of the author’s other books in hopes that they are more horror focused.

I did like the inclusion of Japanese folklore like the Tengu, Oni, and Kitsune but I felt like they didn’t add much to the story like I would’ve liked them to. I don’t know much about them besides the basics but even then I felt like they weren’t given a reason to the story other than just the use of their name and that they were spotted here and there but not doing anything that they are known for in their tales.

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments I have this on my tbr and have heard pretty much the same things you mentioned. Seems people were mostly disappointed overall.

We'll see where I land when I get to it.

I have pre-ordered this based on the premise and cover even though I haven't read Nothing But Blackened Teeth yet --> The Dead Take the A Train
