Marysia | 101 comments I'm reading the memoir Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner (found in a LFL) and the Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games, #0) by Suzanne Collins The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins (had this on hold at the library for a while). I wasn't interested in reading a Snow POV book at first, but wanted more world building info. It's interesting so far though, although we know it won't really get a "good" ending.

I finished out the month of April with The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. The writing is not difficult, and yet it is not an easy read. This was one of the classic group reads for last month. Many popular quotes come from this novel.

~*~*~*~*~*~

“The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.”

“There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book.
Books are well written, or badly written. That is all.”

“Man is many things, but he is not rational.”

“Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

“There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.”

“Live! Live the wonderful life that is in you! Let nothing be lost upon you. Be always searching for new sensations. Be afraid of nothing.”

“Words! Mere words! How terrible they were! How clear, and vivid, and cruel! One could not escape from them. And yet what a subtle magic there was in them! They seemed to be able to give a plastic form to formless things, and to have a music of their own as sweet as that of viol or of lute. Mere words! Was there anything so real as words?”

“Whenever a man does a thoroughly stupid thing, it is always from the noblest motives.”

“I am tired of myself tonight. I should like to be somebody else.”

“Life is a question of nerves, and fibres, and slowly built-up cells in which thought hides itself and passion has its dreams. You may fancy yourself safe and think yourself strong. But a chance tone of colour in a room or a morning sky, a particular perfume that you had once loved and that brings subtle memories with it, a line from a forgotten poem that you had come across again, a cadence from a piece of music that you had ceased to play... I tell you, that it is on things like these that our lives depend.”

“There is no such thing as a good influence. Because to influence a person is to give him one's own soul. He does not think his natural thoughts, or burn with his natural passions. His virtures are not real to him. His sins, if there are such thing as sins, are borrowed. He becomes an echo of someone else's music, an actor of a part that has not been written for him.”

“You know more than you think you know, just as you know less than you want to know.”

“When we are happy, we are always good, but when we are good, we are not always happy.”

“The past could always be annihilated. Regret, denial, or forgetfulness could do that. But the future was inevitable.”
