The cross between science fiction and mystery worked well. What a great first sentence! However, the book quickly goes back and forth in time without notice causing one to feel unsettled and disrupting the flow and pacing. These instances are also from different points of view and only slowly reveal what has happened in the past. Despite this, the plot was interesting and complex. Overall, this novel was entertaining and had great world-building.

Crime thriller, legal thriller

Well-developed characters, a great setting, and a page-turning story line.

Heartbreaking novel. Unfortunately the writing style didn't appeal to me. However, this is an outlier opinion.

Historical fiction

Danger, intrigue, the Olympics, and a possible romance take center stage in this novel. The plot is twisty and the story kept me captivated despite a few slow spots. The historical references to events during the Olympics added a significant layer of interest and realism to the plot.

Listened to an audio recording of The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh yesterday. It’s a novella of about 127 pages or 3-1/2 hours of listening. The second book this week in which I did not see the twist coming. This was one of the classic group’s October selections and I found a free Audible recording on YouTube. Excellent narrator.
