Goodbye, X?

Bruce I just finished reading The Last Orphan, and, as usual, greatly enjoyed Evan Smoak’s latest adventures. I wondered, though, if I was missing Hurwitz’s message, i.e., is this the end?

For one, Hurwitz titles it “the LAST orphan” (and Evan is not literally the last, because Candy is alive). More importantly, Hurwitz seems to be giving the Orphan X series some “finishing” touches: Evan is actually acknowledging and dealing with feelings; he and Joey share emotional moments and reach a more mature level in their relationship; Mia survives her surgery and recovers from her coma, but Evan acknowledges the relationship is doomed, and ends it, etc., etc.

OTOH, Evan lets the main villain live, while vowing to keep an eye on him; he makes a sudden and emotional decision to meet his biological father, etc., etc.

I haven’t been able to find any interviews or articles, so what do you think? Is X gone, or will he return?

Stephen E Starr I sure hope that will not be the case. The book ended with Evan in New Mexico (i think that’s where his dad is) ready to find his dad so I’m hoping that a new adventure will come up meaning a new story! Let’s hope so!

Joann My thoughts are the same as Stephen's that he will be looking for his dad. Time will tell.

I hope you and Stephen are both right!

Hurwitz hasn’t SAID anything, but, as I said, there were some very non-X “emotions,” and many relationships (Joey, Mia, POTUS, etc.) seemed “settled.” It could be that Hurwitz himself hasn’t decided whether or not to move on.

Kevin Schaeffer I suspect there will be more books, but this was my least favorite of the series. It wasn't so much that X was off his game. He still did lots of unbelievable stuff. I just think the story was thin. The first half of the book was strange, over the top, but weird. That whole scene where he was captured, it was so loony, I thought at first he was just dreaming. It was weak. Naomi and the president were both annoying characters, and the bad guys were lame. The bright spot was Candy, she always spices things up, and Tommy and Joey are solid in support. But not enough to carry Orphan X's ass, put him out to pasture.

Cheryl I read the book so long ago
I don't remember Evan going to New Mexico
I thought he was mad when he found out Joey was looking and shut it down
I thought the Presidsnt was after him again
And he and Mia have been here before
There to much left Too many places for Evan to go inside and out

I.may have to reread it

I agree though the President was most annoying
Even though its.a.been there done that I love the read another Let's kill her book
Maybe make it a inbetween

I do not agree he should be put out to pasture
That's a.terrible suggestion in my opinion
I just looked the first chapter was classic
Hold.my vodka
I.mean it doesn't get much better than that
