Louise | 3331 comments New Task

X Books - Read a book where the title starts with X

message 603: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I'm reading a couple of longer books now - 11/22/63 (600+) The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois (600+) orange!
and The Dark Forest (500-600)
The last one has an author with an x in his name, so maybe that'll come up again!

Update

Page Towers
We have completed the 200-299 and 300-399 range :)
It is those bigger books that will likely be tough again this month if you have any to pull out of the archives!

Page Range Required Read so far
100-199 10 8
200-299 20 20
300-399 30 30
400-499 30 10
500-599 20 11
600+ 10 5
Free choice 103 42

Chipmunks

If possible, let's fill these tasks with 200-399 page books as we have already completed those categories. The other categories we still need to fill the base tower this month. For extra points for those bigger books though, you can choose one with a lovely coloured cover!

6. Read a booker award winner (Louise is reading one)
16. Read an international booker award winner (note: different to “normal” booker award - captains group ruling has opened this task only to nominees also: https://www.goodreads.com/award/show/...) (Nistha is reading one)
24. Read a book with a creature with 10 limbs on the cover (e.g. lobster, shrimp, crab) (Amy the book-bat)

32. Read a book set in, or by an author from China
33. Read a book set in, or by an author from Malaysia
34. Read a book written by Nobel winner (can be any Nobel winner, not just literature)
41. Read a book set in, or by an author from South Korea
42. Read book from the GR "Best of 2021" list (see https://www.goodreads.com/list/best_o...)
43. Read a book with a character who works in STEM career (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
44. Read a book where the title starts with X

Rainbows
We have completed 8 which is awesome! We have another 6 underway - blue and black seem to be the easiest to get, so other colours are appreciated!

message 606: by Nistha (new)

Nistha | 333 comments I finished task 16, onto my >400 pages books now

message 607: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 152 comments I should be done with my 600+ book in the next couple days

message 608: by Amy the book-bat (new)

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments If anyone reads the Sue Grafton novels, there is one titled X

It is #24 in the series, but I believe you could read it as a standalone if you wanted to. I read it recently, so I don't think I can reread it yet.

Do we still need a "Y" book for the spell-outs? That is the last one I need to read to complete that series. And I think it has a green cover?

message 609: by Amy the book-bat (new)

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments I put in a couple library requests for books by Nobel winning authors. Hopefully I can get them quickly and complete that task.

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 1397 comments Question: I have a book set in Hong Kong (which is now part of China - just not Chinese mainland), would this work for set in China? or does it need to be Chinese Mainland?

I read The Last Word this month - it is about how an author stalks his 1 star reviewer who is living in an isolated setting. It is more mystery thriller (but tagged psychological thriller 18 times also - it is a new book so does not have as much ratings yet). I would say he does get under her skin by continuously asking her to take the review down and stalking her, but defer to you if this fits the task.

OH lol OK thanks :)

message 627: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Louise, should I read the X title book? If so, do I just post it in the BOOKS tab and then you place it in the best spot?

message 628: by Beth (last edited Jun 14, 2023 08:01AM) (new)

Beth | 1659 comments Vicki, I also have an X book (I've been traveling on vacation and had spotty connection) but if that one looks good to you go ahead and grab it! Then I can just read anything I see in the house I'm staying at.

Are plays OK? I just read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two, and ARbooks says it's 45268 words.

It deals with a parent/child relationship.

Although I also read I'm Glad My Mom Died which definitely is all about a parent/child relationship.

message 629: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Beth, I was only going to read it because I had it on my TBR shelf, but it's not truly my kind of book. I went ahead and started it last night so I'll finish it for us. Thanks :)

Saar The Book owl | 728 comments Oh no, my entire message has dissapeared....

Typing it again, haha: Sorry for being MIA the first weeks of this month. My exams are finally over for now, so back to work and life.
I can read a book on the list of Top 10 books 2021: The Ride of Her Life: The True Story of a Woman, Her Horse, and Their Last-Chance Journey Across America

Also, I can squeeze in a book with a yellow or orange cover. It's a bit in between.

Melissa | 1895 comments Hello all!
The creators of Tower Teams have given us more spell-outs!
They are under the tab "team towers." The link to the announcement is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
That link gives the rules for spell-outs again too.
I do love a good spell-out! I've read a lot of interesting books based on a character whose name starts with "x" or "z."
It looks like we can include any books that we finished after 9am UTC June 15th. I know there were a bunch that were finished yesterday, so let us know if any of them work.

message 641: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments School just let out for me. Phew, I'm exhausted. Fortunately, I just have teacher duties and classes for the rest of June - so I hope to have a little more reading time. Then when July hits, I'm not getting off the couch for 2 weeks.
Well, maybe I'll go outside for a minute.

message 642: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I posted the spell-out rules in message 9, if you're looking for a quick-ish way to find them.

message 645: by Amy the book-bat (new)

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments Read the Nobel Prize task and really didn't like the book. Guess I took one for the team. I have liked the author in the past, so I was sad that this book was a dud for me.

I will look and see if I can find something for the Women's Prize task.

message 646: by Amy the book-bat (new)

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 914 comments I put in a request at the library for a Women's Prize novel. There are some really good titles on the list. I hope I like the one I requested better than the one for Nobel.

Same thing happened to me for the Intl Booker.. had high expectations from the book but did not enjoy it.
