Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 3851 comments Hi Ashley. Double check the books needed for the roadblocks. We moved Trisha's book to Intersection as I am also reading The House in the Pines and BR with Trish.

Looks like we need to find another I book for the second roadbock. If someone can read another book on the Good vs. Evil list I could move Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin to the I position. That's a quick read.

message 507: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) | 1107 comments Are you talking about Amanda's? She did not participate in the BR for The House in the Pines, so we can't use her's for the Intersection task

Amanda (porkchop0911) | 522 comments I have posted my review for The House in the pines and will now start on my Detour book.

The last book you listed under post #503 has Trisha's name next to it.

Yes, that book is under Intersection

Kade Gulluscio (kadebraylen) | 3757 comments I so I forgot that today is another insanely busy day, and I won’t be home until 3 am. 😂. We are traveling to NY to see a concert. I likely can review some of my books if someone can post for me.

And If you need me to read another book for detour let me know. :)

message 512: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) | 1107 comments No problem-o Kade. If you review them, I can post them sometime before Friday, if you don't get to them before me. :) ;)

This round will cover seven (7) days.

Start: April 29th at 12:00 AM (in your time zone)
End: May 5th at 11:59 PM (in your time zone)

Please check in on May 5th between 4:00 - 6:00 PM Eastern. This doesn’t mean you can stop reading for the round, it’s just the team checking in for bonus points.

Route Info: These will be generally easy tasks to complete for each leg of the race. This portion will have at least 15-20 tasks per leg. All repeatable.
1. Read a book set in Italy
2. Read a book with a red cover
3. Read a book with a white cover
4. Read a book with a green cover
5. Read a book with a star on the cover
6. Read a book that has a title ending with a letter in ITALY
7. Read a book from an author that is from or currently lives in Italy
8. Read a book that has been tagged 'Mediterranean' at least 10 times
9. Read a book with the word 'ITALIAN' found in text (pg/% & quote)
10. Read a book that is set in a large city
11. Read a book where the title has the letters L, A, T, I, N in it (in any order)
12. Read a book where the author's first and last initial are in ITALIC
13. Read a book where the main characters first name starts with a letter in ROME
14. Read a book that has Historical Fiction for an MPG
15. Read a book where the series title has the letters E, U, R, O in it (in any order)

Detours: This will be a list related task. Teams will have two lists to choose from and will need to read 5 books from one list. This can be completed by at least two people from a team (one person cannot complete this task).

By the first century BC, the Roman Empire emerged as the dominant power in the Mediterranean Basin and became a leading cultural, political and religious centre, inaugurating the Pax Romana, a period of more than 200 years during which Italy's law, technology, economy, art, and literature developed.

Read a book found on the Lawyer Books or Art & Artists in Fiction listopia

Roadblocks begin at line #225 on the spreadsheet tab. There’s about 6 spell-outs available - please let me know if you need more.

Roadblocks: This will be a spell-out task. Each team will get the same word. It can be completed as many times as you can. If you start a spell-out and don't complete it, you will be penalized by 5 bonus points per uncompleted word.
VATICAN CITY: ✤ VATICAN CITY
Vatican City, officially Vatican City State (Italian: Stato della Città del Vaticano; Latin: Status Civitatis Vaticanæ), is a landlocked independent city-state, microstate and enclave within Rome, Italy

Yield: Each team will have up to 3 yield opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'Yield' against. By yielding, you will be taking away 20 bonus points from that team.

Coeliac disease (British English) or celiac disease (American English) is a long-term autoimmune disorder. It is caused by a reaction to gluten, a group of various proteins found in wheat and in other grains such as barley and rye. By January 2004, extremely low-gluten Church-approved hosts had become available in the United States, Italy and Australia. As of July 2017, the Vatican still outlawed the use of gluten-free bread for Holy Communion.
If you want to use your yield this week - please read for the following:

Read a book that has the word 'GLUTEN' found in text (pg/% & quote) and the main character has an autoimmune disorder

Intersections: This will be a buddy read related task. Meaning you will have to work with someone new (whether on your team or another) and read a book together. The buddy can also be someone in the group but not participating in the challenge. You will need to have at least 4-5 comments per buddy read.

Read a book with someone new within the group. BOTM can also count for this task. This can be repeatable.

U-Turns: Just like the yield task, each team will have up to 3 U-turn opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'U-turn' against. By forcing another team into a U-turn, you will be taking away 10 bonus points from that team.

The automotive industry is a significant part of the Italian manufacturing sector, with over 144,000 firms and almost 485,000 employed people in 2015, and a contribution of 8.5% to Italian GDP. Stellantis is currently the world's fifth-largest auto maker. The country boasts a wide range of acclaimed products, from compact city cars to luxury supercars such as Maserati, Lamborghini, and Ferrari.
If you want to use your U-turn this week - please read for the following:

Read a book that has 144,000+ ratings and has the word 'MASERATI', 'LAMBORGHINI', or 'FERRARI' found in text (pg/% & quote)

Speed Bumps: After check-in day, if your team was randomly selected for last place, you will have this task to complete. It will be a super easy task that one person can complete. For example, 'Red hair on cover (any book edition will count)' or 'Published in January (any year)'.

Read a book with food on the cover

Switchback: This will also be revealed after check-in days and will be a task related to where the team was previously.

Indian music ranges over various traditions and regional styles. Classical music encompasses two genres and their various folk offshoots: the northern Hindustani and the southern Carnatic schools. Regionalised popular forms include filmi and folk music; the syncretic tradition of the bauls is a well-known form of the latter. Indian dance also features diverse folk and classical forms.

Read a book tagged ‘Folklore’ at least 10 times

Just double-check the SS before you post anything this go-around!

I checked posted on the SS for everything also

Team_______|Books___|BRs_____|PgPts___|BonusPts_|Total___

Might be prudent to use against the Shadow Sprinters, since we're neck and neck with them.

message 525: by Ashley (last edited Apr 28, 2023 11:21AM) (new)

Ashley Basile (smashreads) | 1107 comments Kade, I'll post for these once you do a review!

The Darkest Minds
The Trees Grow Before I Bled There; Eric LaRocca

I'm waiting to hear from Vicki about whether she is finished/reviewed/etc for

See It End (Brianna Labuskes)
What Can't Be Seen (Brianna Labuskes)

If we don't hear from her, we need replacements for E and L, plus we need an I

I can switch one of mine for an E and I have an L banked, but we don't have an I anywhere that I see!

We also need Jenny's Intersection book finished.
Amanda I think you said you were almost done with City of Bones
I'll be done with my last book (Tears of Tess) tonight, I was going to finished yesterday, but I don't like it much and I decided to not read much.

message 526: by Kade (new)

Kade Gulluscio (kadebraylen) | 3757 comments Thank you! Sorry I’ve been quiet. I’m exhausted from yesterday. Once I get home from getting my youngest I’ll do reviews. I also need to review a few others I’ve read and didn’t put in spreadsheet so I’ll see if any fit for the spell out?

message 527: by Jammin Jenny (last edited Apr 28, 2023 11:49AM) (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 3851 comments I'm almost done with my intersection book.

I read a book on the Good vs. Evil list that also works for I if it's easier for someone to read a book off that list.

I agree we should use the U-turn against the Shadow Sprinters.

You all checked in! Here are the results for bonus points -

1. Coast Busters - 30 pts
2. Shadow Sprinters - 20 pts***
3. Backroad Bandits - 10 pts

*A U-turn was used against. Lost 10 bonus points. Will be receiving 10 bonus points. Coast Busters have no more U-Turn's available for the rest of this month.
**A Yield was used against. Lost 20 bonus points. Will be receiving -10 bonus points. Backroad Bandits have no more Yields available for the rest of this month.

Winners were chosen via list randomizer and bonus points were decided in a wheel decide (other options were - 20,10,0; 30,15,5; 20,10,5).

Bonus points will be added in your next score update. Points are awarded for the whole team - not individually. Also, tasks for Speed Bumps and Switchback will be revealed tomorrow.

See you all in Italy tomorrow 😊
