This round will cover seven (7) days.

Start: May 6th at 12:00 AM (in your time zone)
End: May 12th at 11:59 PM (in your time zone)

Please check in on May 12th between 4:00 - 6:00 PM Eastern. This doesn’t mean you can stop reading for the round, it’s just the team checking in for bonus points.

Route Info: These will be generally easy tasks to complete for each leg of the race. This portion will have at least 15-20 tasks per leg. All repeatable.
1. Read a book set in New Zealand
2. Read a book with a red cover
3. Read a book with a white cover
4. Read a book with a blue cover
5. Read a book with a crown on the cover
6. Read a book that has a title ending with a letter in NEW ZEALAND
7. Read a book from an author that is from or currently lives in New Zealand
8. Read a book that has a boat on the cover
9. Read a book with the word 'ISLAND' found in text (pg/% & quote)
10. Read a book that with at least 2 people on cover
11. Read a book where 'LAND' is found intact in the title/subtitle.
12. Read a book where the author's first and last initial are in AUCKLAND
13. Read a book where the main characters first name starts with a letter in WELLINGTON
14. Read a book that has New Adult for an MPG
15. Read a book where the series title has the letters K, I, W, I in it (in any order)

Detours: This will be a list related task. Teams will have two lists to choose from and will need to read 5 books from one list. This can be completed by at least two people from a team (one person cannot complete this task).

As recorded in the 2018 census, Samoan is the most widely spoken non-official language (2.2%), followed by "Northern Chinese" (including Mandarin, 2.0%), Hindi (1.5%), and French (1.2%). New Zealand Sign Language was reported to be understood by 22,986 people (0.5%); it became one of New Zealand's official languages in 2006.

Read a book found on the Samoa Books or Sign Language Books listopia

Roadblocks begin at line #225 on the spreadsheet tab. There’s about 6 spell-outs available - please let me know if you need more.

Roadblocks: This will be a spell-out task. Each team will get the same word. It can be completed as many times as you can. If you start a spell-out and don't complete it, you will be penalized by 5 bonus points per uncompleted word.
MĀORI: ✤ MĀORI
Māori (Māori: [ˈmaːɔɾi], or te reo Māori ('the Māori language'), also known as te reo ('the language'), is an Eastern Polynesian language spoken by the Māori people, the indigenous population of mainland New Zealand.

Yield: Each team will have up to 3 yield opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'Yield' against. By yielding, you will be taking away 20 bonus points from that team.

Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 5.1 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening of culture arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori, and New Zealand Sign Language, with the local dialect of English being dominant.
If you want to use your yield this week - please read for the following:

Read a book that someone else on your team rated 5 stars (please tell me who) and the main character is a minority

Intersections: This will be a buddy read related task. Meaning you will have to work with someone new (whether on your team or another) and read a book together. The buddy can also be someone in the group but not participating in the challenge. You will need to have at least 4-5 comments per buddy read.

Read a book with someone new within the group. BOTM can also count for this task. This can be repeatable.

U-Turns: Just like the yield task, each team will have up to 3 U-turn opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'U-turn' against. By forcing another team into a U-turn, you will be taking away 10 bonus points from that team.

The first European visitor to New Zealand, Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, named the islands Staten Land, believing they were part of the Staten Landt that Jacob Le Maire had sighted off the southern end of South America. Hendrik Brouwer proved that the South American land was a small island in 1643, and Dutch cartographers subsequently renamed Tasman's discovery Nova Zeelandia from Latin, after the Dutch province of Zeeland. This name was later anglicised to New Zealand.
If you want to use your U-turn this week - please read for the following:

Read a book with a title that has a double vowel in it. [It must be the same letter and be intact.] (ex: Nova Zeelandia) and has the word 'EXPLORER' found in text (pg/% & quote)

Speed Bumps: After check-in day, if your team was randomly selected for last place, you will have this task to complete. It will be a super easy task that one person can complete. For example, 'Red hair on cover (any book edition will count)' or 'Published in January (any year)'.

Read a book where the main character has at least one pet

Switchback: This will also be revealed after check-in days and will be a task related to where the team was previously.

Italy covers an area of 301,230 km2 (116,310 sq mi), with a population of about 60 million. It is the third-most populous member state of the European Union, the sixth-most populous country in Europe, and the tenth-largest country in the continent by land area.

Read a book that is either #3, #6 or #10 in a series

Not available at this portion of the challenge:

Kade Gulluscio (kadebraylen) | 3757 comments for next cycle, i think we should do books off the sign language list. but i'm okay with either one!

if we do the sign language list, i can claim these;
Archer's Voice
Set Me Free
It Ain't Me, Babe
Signs of Survival: A Memoir of the Holocaust
Love Language
Wrong Way Home

if we do the samoan list, i can claim at least one or two of the following for it;
Illumine Her
Vā : Stories by Women of the Moana
The Right Swipe
Pua's Kiss

message 571: by Kade (new)

Kade Gulluscio (kadebraylen) | 3757 comments of course, everytime i'm about to get things done, i start feeling naseous. ; x so if i don't get the reviews done / posted tonight, i definitely will tomorrow. I've finished all my books in the spreadsheet, and I also have a few others to review on top of it. So let me know if we still need a spell-out or anything else!

Yeah, the lists aren't as exciting as the last few, but I can definitely claim a few from each list. Some of them are under 200 pages so it'll be easier.
