no worries Jenny! Sometimes life is brutal! I would say, just look through what you have claimed and move things to banked if needed, and post anything you've read in the review thread. If you can't get to another book, that's ok. Do whatever you are able to!

This round will cover seven (7) days.

Start: May 13th at 12:00 AM (in your time zone)
End: May 19th at 11:59 PM (in your time zone)

Please check in on May 19th between 4:00 - 6:00 PM Eastern. This doesn’t mean you can stop reading for the round, it’s just the team checking in for bonus points.

Route Info: These will be generally easy tasks to complete for each leg of the race. This portion will have at least 15-20 tasks per leg. All repeatable.
1. Read a book set in Brazil
2. Read a book with a green cover
3. Read a book with a yellow cover
4. Read a book with a blue cover
5. Read a book where the title letters are in green
6. Read a book that has a title ending with a letter in BRAZIL
7. Read a book from an author that is from or currently lives in BRAZIL
8. Read a book that has a planet on the cover
9. Read a book with the word 'LATIN' found in text (pg/% & quote)
10. Read a book that that has an edition written in Portuguese (you don't have to read that edition)
11. Read a book where 'STAR' is found intact in the title/subtitle.
12. Read a book where the author's first and last initial are in BRASILIA
13. Read a book where the main characters first name starts with a letter in SAO PAULO
14. Read a book that is tagged 'South America' at least 10 times
15. Read a book where the series title has the letters B, R, A, Z, I, L in it (in any order)

Detours: This will be a list related task. Teams will have two lists to choose from and will need to read 5 books from one list. This can be completed by at least two people from a team (one person cannot complete this task).

It is one of the most multicultural and ethnically diverse nations, due to over a century of mass immigration from around the world, and the most populous Roman Catholic-majority country.

Read a book found on the Best Multicultural General Fiction or Diversity in Young Adult and Middle Grade listopia

Roadblocks begin at line #225 on the spreadsheet tab. There’s about 6 spell-outs available - please let me know if you need more.

Roadblocks: This will be a spell-out task. Each team will get the same word. It can be completed as many times as you can. If you start a spell-out and don't complete it, you will be penalized by 5 bonus points per uncompleted word.
RIO DE JANEIRO: ✤ RIO DE JANEIRO
Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese: [ˈʁi.u d(ʒi) ʒɐˈne(j)ɾu]; literally 'River of January'), or simply Rio, is the capital of the state of the same name (Brazil's third most populous state), and the second most populous city in Brazil, after São Paulo.

Yield: Each team will have up to 3 yield opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'Yield' against. By yielding, you will be taking away 20 bonus points from that team.

Independence was achieved in 1822 with the creation of the Empire of Brazil, a unitary state governed under a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary system. The ratification of the first constitution in 1824 led to the formation of a bicameral legislature, now called the National Congress. Slavery was abolished in 1888. The country became a presidential republic in 1889 following a military coup d'état.
If you want to use your yield this week - please read for the following:

Read a book that has the word 'COUP' found in text (pg/% & quote) and was published in the 80's

Intersections: This will be a buddy read related task. Meaning you will have to work with someone new (whether on your team or another) and read a book together. The buddy can also be someone in the group but not participating in the challenge. You will need to have at least 4-5 comments per buddy read.

Read a book with someone new within the group. BOTM can also count for this task. This can be repeatable.

U-Turns: Just like the yield task, each team will have up to 3 U-turn opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'U-turn' against. By forcing another team into a U-turn, you will be taking away 10 bonus points from that team.

Brazil has the largest share of global wealth in South America and it is one of the world's major breadbaskets, being the largest producer of coffee for the last 150 years. However, the country retains noticeable corruption, crime and social inequality.
If you want to use your U-turn this week - please read for the following:

Read a book that has coffee on the cover and has been tagged 'CRIME' at least 10 times

Speed Bumps: After check-in day, if your team was randomly selected for last place, you will have this task to complete. It will be a super easy task that one person can complete. For example, 'Red hair on cover (any book edition will count)' or 'Published in January (any year)'.

Read a book with an MPG Sports

Switchback: This will also be revealed after check-in days and will be a task related to where the team was previously.

In addition to Vietnam and the two world wars, New Zealand fought in the Second Boer War, the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency, the Gulf War, and the Afghanistan War. It has contributed forces to several regional and global peacekeeping missions, such as those in Cyprus, Somalia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Sinai, Angola, Cambodia, the Iran–Iraq border, Bougainville, East Timor, and the Solomon Islands.

Read a book that features a mission

I posted my detour book for the Sign Language list.

I finished the reviews for the 3 books for the spell-it-out but I'm not going to be able to get on the computer to post those by tonight. I'm also not sure if Raquel has finished hers so the spell-it-out would be complete. If she has, can someone please post my 3 reviews for the ones Ashley requested in message 648? The review and buddy read links are in the banked tab.

You all checked in! Here are the results for bonus points -

1. Shadow Sprinter - 30 pts
2. Backroad Bandits - 20 pts
3. Coast Busters - 10 pts

Winners were chosen via list randomizer and bonus points were decided in a wheel decide (other options were - 20,10,0; 30,15,5; 20,10,5).

Bonus points will be added in your next score update. Points are awarded for the whole team - not individually. Also, tasks for Speed Bumps and Switchback will be revealed tomorrow.

See you all in Brazil tomorrow 😊

Yeahhh, tonight just further cemented in my mind why I don't allow my 14 year old to hang out places unsupervised. :l Went to the fair with her, her boyfriend, and my 9 year old. 5 minutes after we arrive, my cousin's daughter whom is also 14 is suddenly being jumped by 3 girls. Literally - jumped. She's on the ground with 3 girls kicking / punching her. My first thought was to hide my son's face, because I knew he would be effected by this. Then I realized no one else was helping, so me and 2 other moms intervened. Them more so than I did. I always panic in these situations and worry about whether someone may have a knife or gun. THEN i had to call my mom to call my cousin to tell her to get to the fair asap. [ I haven't been in contact with said cousin in a few years. ]. I believe the girl is okay. I told her father what happened, offered a witness statement, and told them i'd press charges it were me, because as soon as the cops took cuffs off the main instigator, she was laughing and recreating the scene... not very remorseful.

Oy Vey man. Teens scare me.

Ashley Basile (smashreads) | 1107 comments Soooo... I went to bed last night and was peacefully resting when we hear a huge bang. Thought a tree limb came down in a car... nope! Someone flipped their car right in front of the house and hit my daughter's boyfriend's car that was in front of the house! Had to deal with that drama for an hour! Thankfully everyone is fine.

This morning I woke up with a headache, took something and went back to bed, woke up with half my eyelid swollen! I look like I got punched.

It's going to be a long weekend. I'm going back to bed to start over.
