Detours: This will be a list related task. Teams will have two lists to choose from and will need to read 5 books from one list. This can be completed by at least two people from a team (one person cannot complete this task).Japanese popular culture includes Japanese cinema, cuisine, television programs, anime, manga, video games, music, and doujinshi, all of which retain older artistic and literary traditions; many of their themes and styles of presentation can be traced to traditional art forms.
Read a book found on the Video Games Books or Anime Books listopia*
**Anime books will count for this task list no matter what the page count is after 1/4 is taken off.
Roadblocks begin at line #225 on the spreadsheet tab. There’s about 6 spell-outs available - please let me know if you need more.
Roadblocks: This will be a spell-out task. Each team will get the same word. It can be completed as many times as you can. If you start a spell-out and don't complete it, you will be penalized by 5 bonus points per uncompleted word.GEISHA: ✤ GEISHA ✤Geisha (芸者) (/ˈɡeɪʃə/; Japanese: [ɡeːɕa]), also known as geiko (芸子) (in Kyoto and Kanazawa) or geigi (芸妓), are a class of female Japanese performing artists and entertainers trained in traditional Japanese performing arts styles, such as dance, music and singing, as well as being proficient conversationalists and hosts. Their distinct appearance is characterised by long, trailing kimono, traditional hairstyles and oshiroi make-up.
Yield: Each team will have up to 3 yield opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'Yield' against. By yielding, you will be taking away 20 bonus points from that team.Himeji Castle in Hyogo Prefecture is the most well-preserved Japanese castle and is a great example of traditional Japanese castle architecture. Osaka Castle, also a former imperial palace, is particularly popular in spring, with all its surrounding cherry blossom trees. If you want to use your yield this week - please read for the following:Read a book that is set in the spring and has the word 'CASTLE' found in text (pg/% & quote)
Intersections: This will be a buddy read related task. Meaning you will have to work with someone new (whether on your team or another) and read a book together. The buddy can also be someone in the group but not participating in the challenge. You will need to have at least 4-5 comments per buddy read.Read a book with someone new within the group. BOTM can also count for this task. This can be repeatable.
U-Turns: Just like the yield task, each team will have up to 3 U-turn opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'U-turn' against. By forcing another team into a U-turn, you will be taking away 10 bonus points from that team. Many historians believe that sumo wrestling began as an ancient Shinto ritual. Today, it’s the national sport of Japan.
Physical strength plays an important role in this famous sport, where a professional sumo wrestler must force their opponent out of the ring or make them touch the floor with a part of their body that isn’t the soles of their feet.
To do this, the wrestlers will push, grapple, or shove their opponent down with sheer force. If you want to use your U-turn this week - please read for the following:Read a book that features someone famous (your interpretation) and has the words 'PUSH' and 'SHOVE' found in text (pg/% & quote)
Speed Bumps: After check-in day, if your team was randomly selected for last place, you will have this task to complete. It will be a super easy task that one person can complete. For example, 'Red hair on cover (any book edition will count)' or 'Published in January (any year)'.Read a book that was considered popular this year (your interpretation)
Switchback: This will also be revealed after check-in days and will be a task related to where the team was previously.Read a book that has the words 'WATER' and 'FALL' found in text (pg/% & quote)

"Anime books will count for this task list no matter what the page count is after 1/4 is taken off."
Meaning if we read a graphic novel on the list that says it's 100 pages, it will count for the detour task, but it's only worth 25 pages.

Typically, we can only use Graphic Novels for page points, and not a task, unless that book is at least 400 pages (as that would make the page count 100). If the page count is under 400 pages, we can just review and post as page points only, with no task needed.
Does that make sense? If you have any GNs on your read list from within the challenge dates, if you review them, we can use them for page points. :)

You all checked in! Here are the results for bonus points -
1. Coast Busters - 30 pts
2. Backroad Bandits - 20 pts*
3. Shadow Sprinters - 10 pts
*A U-Turn was used against. Lost 10 bonus points. Will be receiving 10 bonus points. Shadow Sprinters have no more U-Turns available for the rest of this month.
Winners were chosen via list randomizer and bonus points were decided in a wheel decide (other options were - 20,10,0; 30,15,5; 20,10,5).
Bonus points will be added in your next score update. Points are awarded for the whole team - not individually. Also, tasks for Speed Bumps and Switchback will be revealed tomorrow.
See you all in Japan tomorrow 😊

I will be picking up one this week that's on the Anime list if we end up going with that one. It's the June GN BOTM.

The anime list; There ARE light novels on this list - which count as regular books as they are actual books, not graphic novels. So we could still get higher page counts with those. there are a TON of books on this list i can read / want to read / own.
And if i remember correctly, these count differently this time since they're detour reads, right? Alaina - could you explain it again?

- this one has been on my TBR FOREVERRRR

these ones are light novels. NOT just the graphic novel / manga;

this one is also an actual novel;

i'll also likely do fruits basket which is BOTM.

If we do anime, I can read a bunch of GN. Hopefully it makes up for some points.

Since it’s the last week of the challenge, I wanted to be nice and give you all the anime list for an option. If you pick that list for the detour, then there’s no page requirement. Any book will count no matter what after 1/4 is taken off. Only for the detour list.

Shia mentioned being able to read a bunch from the anime list.
and i definitely have a bunch i can do.
Alaina - is there a limit to how many we CAN do for detour? can we do more than 5 and have them all count?

Shia, do you want me to add any for you?
Kade wrote: "so it sounds like melanie is doing fruit's basket from the anime list which is also BOTM.

Still only 5 books for the detour.

I was out with my kiddos for a family night and didn't post anything on Friday night. I will check to see if it was posted, but it was ok, because we had a back up posted! If it wasn't posted I'll see where we can use it this week.
