One Island, Many Queens

7. Mary I Stuart, Queen of Scotland (1542-1587)

Simultaneously with the reigns of Mary and Elizabeth Tudor in England, their cousin, Mary Stuart, was enthroned as an infant in neighboring Scotland. Sent to France during the Anglo-Scottish wars, Mary was raised in the court of Catherine de' Medici where she married Francis II of Valois. Upon his death in 1561, she returned to Scotland where she came into serious conflict with the new Calvinist religion. After a tumultuous series of events she fled to England hoping to receive protection from her cousin Elizabeth, only to be considered a threat and thrown in prison for two decades. There she became a living symbol of the Counter-Reformation and many plots to dethrone Elizabeth were organized in her name. Based on these she was eventually executed. It is of interest that her only son, James, ultimately inherited both kingdoms and was the first British king to reunite the Scottish and English dominions.
✱ Read a book set in France or Scotland (tell us where) OR read a book where several of the characters are relatives (tell us who and their relationship).
8. Mary II Stuart (1662-1694)

With the Stuarts being Catholics, the monarchy of England continued the struggle for a national religion. The nation's fear of a return to Catholicism led to James II being removed from office in 1688. The following year his eldest daughter, Mary II, and her husband, William III of Orange, both Protestants, were enthroned as joint monarchs. On this occasion the rule was established that no Catholic could ever reign in England. Although Mary was queen by right, she often deferred rule to her husband, so much so that William continued to reign even after her death. However, Mary was a strong influence on her husband's government and took advantage of his absences to actually exercise power.
✱ Read a book with 1, 6 or 8 in its total count page (share count) OR read a book where a married couple run a business together or work together to complete a major project (briefly share details).
9. Anne Stuart (1665-1714)

Anne became queen of England and Scotland on the death of her brother-in-law William III in 1702. Like her sister Mary, she also married a Protestant prince, George of Denmark. The most important law of her reign was the Act of Union, which in 1707 merged the various English kingdoms into a single entity. Thus the United Kingdom was born. While Mary II was childless, Anne's children all died in infancy, so upon her death the kingdom passed to a distant cousin, the German prince George I von Hannover.
✱ Read a book set in the United Kingdom (tell us where) OR read a book where someone is pregnant or a birth occurs (tell us which).
10. Queen Victoria (1819-1901)

Queen Victoria inherited the throne in 1837 after the heirless deaths of her father's three older brothers. Hers was the longest English reign before Elizabeth II and became known as the Victorian Age. It was a period of great economic and territorial development, making the British Empire at the time the largest empire in history. But after the death of her beloved consort Prince Albert in 1861, the queen withdrew from public life, giving a puritanical turn to her life. From 1876, Victoria also held the title of Empress of India and was she latter nicknamed "Grandmother of Europe" because her children and grandchildren all married into royal families, so much so that most of Europe's current rulers are her descendants.
✱ Read a book set during the Victorian Age OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in GRANDMOTHER OF EUROPE (three words minimum).
11. Elizabeth II (1926-2022)

Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952 and, as is known, hers was the world's longest reign after that of Louis XIV of France, though his reign did begin when he was not yet 5 years old. The Queen's death is so recent and so widely remembered around the world that it seems unnecessary to list her accomplishments. Though it's important to know that she was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states and head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her main objective was to preserve this large commonwealth, keeping it secure and intact. Unfortunately, her reign was also characterized by the strong media focus on the private lives of the royal family, definitely a sign of our times. It is worth mentioning that the family acquired the surname Windsor in 1917 to replace the previous one of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which was "too German" given the ongoing conflict. This is a curiosity that not everyone knows.
✱ Read a large book (more than 400 pages; share page number) OR read a book whose title starts with a letter found in WINDSOR (ignore A, An or The).
12. Future Queens

After Queen Elizabeth II there is a succession of kings ahead for the UK (Charles III, William and George), so we will only have queen consorts. If we are looking for a female heir as reigning sovereign we can turn to other European monarchies. At the moment there is only one queen, Margrethe II of Denmark, who has just celebrated 50 years of reign. However, in recent decades many countries have abolished the Salic law, which forbade women from the throne, almost all establishing that the heir is the eldest child of the king or queen, regardless of their sex. Thus we have a series of crown princesses: Victoria (b. 1977) in Sweden; Elizabeth (b. 2001) in Belgium; Catherine Amalia (b. 2003) in the Netherlands; Leonor (b. 2005) in Spain. It should be noted that three queens succeeded one another in the Netherlands between 1890 and 2013: Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix.
✱ Read a book with a lone female figure on the cover (post cover) OR read a book that takes place in the future (tell us when).

Patrizia has put together an interesting look at past queens of the United Kingdom.
When the news arrived on 8 September 2022 that Queen Elizabeth II had died, millions of people all over the world were struck by the news. The queen had, in fact, been a constant presence in the lives of many people. England, and then the United Kingdom, have had several equally important queens, almost all regnant sovereigns and not only consorts of kings. Here is their story.
Complete 12 tasks (one from each section).

Queens & Tasks
1. Boudica (I century)
The first queen in English history is almost legendary: it was Boudica, queen of the Iceni, a people who lived in eastern England. In 60 CE, she became famous for leading a rebellion of the eastern populations after the Romans unleashed a campaign against the druids (i.e. the Celtic priests). The revolt was put down and the queen died shortly after for unclear reasons. For centuries Boudica fell into oblivion, but in the 16th century she was rediscovered, although the height of her fame was reached in the Victorian era, when she became a heroine and a symbol for the whole kingdom.
✱ Read a book with a female MC (tell us her name) OR read a book tagged FANTASY or FOLKLORE on its GR homepage.
2. Empress Maude (c. 1102-1167)
Matilda (or Maude), the granddaughter of William the Conqueror, married Emperor Henry V in 1110, a marriage that remained without offspring. In 1120, Maude became heir to the throne of England due to the sudden death of her brother William. But when Maude married Godfrey Plantagenet in 1128 (after the death of Henry V in 1125), the English barons reneged on their oath made the previous year recognizing her as legitimate heir to the throne. When Maude's father died in 1135, a war broke out between her and her cousin Stephen of Blois. It continued until 1153, when Stephen finally agreed to recognize Maude's eldest son Henry as his heir. Maude died having never really reigned as queen, but her figure is very important in the history of the island.
✱ Read a book where there is a conflict in the plot (it doesn't have to be a war; tell us briefly what happens) OR read a book whose title starts with a letter found in MAUDE (ignore A, An or The).
3. Eleanor of Aquitaine (c.1122-1204)
Eleanor of Poitiers inherited Aquitaine from her father, becoming one of the richest, most powerful women in medieval Europe. It is therefore not surprising that she married two kings. She first married King Louis VI of France in 1137. After that marriage had been annulled in 1152, she married Henry Plantagenet who became king of England two years later. In 1173 Eleanor supported her sons in their rebellion against their father and was then held captive until her husband's death in 1189. She then became regent of the kingdom when her son, Richard the Lionheart, went on the Third Crusade. A well-known patron of the arts, Eleanor died in the French abbey of Fontevrault, where she had retired to live in the last years of her life.
✱ Read a book with a wealthy character (tell us who) OR read a book whose author's first and last name can be found in ELEANOR OF AQUITAINE.
4. The Six Wives of Henry VIII
Henry VIII is known for his six wives and for the ease with which he got rid of one to marry the next. All this was due to his frantic search for a male heir and caused, among other things, the birth of the Anglican Church. His unfortunate wives were, in order: Catherine of Aragon (1485-1536, divorced in 1533); Anne Boleyn (1501 c.-1536, executed); Jane Seymour (1508c.-1537, died in childbirth); Anne von Kleve (1515-1557, married and divorced in 1540); Catherine Howard (c.1523-1542, executed) and Catherine Parr (1512-1548, widowed in 1547). The only children who survived into adulthood were born of the first three marriages, but the only son, Edward VI, died just sixteen in 1553.

5. Mary I Tudor (1516-1558)
Upon the death of Edward VI his older sister Mary, daughter of Catherine of Aragon, ascended the throne. This queen is best known for her attempt to restore Catholicism in England, unleashing religious persecutions that led to her being called Bloody Mary. In 1554 she married the future Philip II of Spain, but no children were born of the marriage, so on her death the kingdom passed to her half-sister Elizabeth.
✱ Read a book with blood on the cover (post cover) OR read a book with a MC whose is very religious (briefly share details).
6. Elizabeth I Tudor (1533-1603)
Elizabeth I is one of the best-known queens in world history. It was under her reign that England laid the foundations for future commercial and maritime supremacy. She also gave her name to her era, characterized by an extraordinary cultural flowering. William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Francis Bacon are just some of the writers who lived during her reign. Elizabeth never married and was known as "The Virgin Queen". It has been suggested that this is perhaps due to sexual harassment she might have suffered as a young girl or because of the real fear of dying in childbirth. With her death the Tudor family died out and the throne passed to James I Stuart, although there was no shortage of other claimants.
✱ Read a book written by an author whose first name is ELIZABETH (or any variation of it) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in THE VIRGIN QUEEN (two word minimum).
