What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I’ve read most of the major series, either in their entirety or enough to know that I don’t want to continue. I’m looking for more obscure series/titles. I enjoy Urban Fantasy as well but I’m looking for something shallower. lol I’m talking insta-love here but not just falling in lust either. Humor is a big plus.

I know you said little to know vampires but if you are looking for romance and lots of humor I would sugguest Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost.

On the other hand, in terms of more traditional PNRs, authors I don't see on your list are Karen Marie Moning's Highlander series. There is time travel and the Seely Court and Sandra Hill's Viking series. They do some time travelling too, and I believe there's a witch in one.

Keep writing titles, and then realize... It's full of vamps.

I second this answer, I find Molly Harper to be one of the most humorous PNR authors out there.

How about Dakota Cassidy's books? Her Accidental series (first book is The Accidental Werewolf) is light on the vamps as it switches supernatural between books and her Hell duo doesn't have any that I remember (first book Kiss & Hell)

I've read the first two of that series, and as much as I liked Cat and Bones, I'm sick to death of vampires lately.

I added several of these, thanks. Except for Nalini Singh, I read Angels' Blood which I liked alright but I tried reading Slave to Sensation three different times and never could get into it.

I added both the The Good Fairies of New York and Beyond the Highland Mist. I have to ask is the Viking series as much of a bodice ripper as the covers make them out to be? Because Holy Fabio...

Oh no... I read Nalini's Angel series first and put off reading the Psy/Changeling series for ages. I hated the pink over art, and the blurb just rubbed me the wrong way. couldn't figure out what the Psy's were and it didn't make me want to try either.

Then I was stuck for book options... and 'unexcitedly' caved and tried Slave to Sensation. I was hooked in the first chapter or two. Love re-reading them each time a new books gets added.

It's funny how characters/plots can hit people in such different ways. Couldn't imagine my library without Illium, Elena, the twins - Jules & Rome, and let's not overlook Judd & Hawke!

i think StS is hard for people because the basic premise is the idea that the psy don't feel, they have had their emotions essentially breed out of them...but if you can get past that - it is one of my favorite series - I prolong reading the books until right before the new one comes out, so i always have something in reserve

what about dragons - GA Aiken (aka Shelly Laurenston) has her Dragon actually series - Dragon Actually - I haven't read it (its on my TBR) but people swear by her

i also enjoyed Dragon Her Back when I read it, but its bk 3 in a series and I need to go back and read books 1 and 2 now

I read the first three of Aiken's Dragon series. Pretty funny stuff. I just added the first of the Vegas Dragons to my list, Luck of the Dragon

I tried StS first, then read Angel's Blood, then tried StS again. Finally, I used a credit from Audible and tried it that way. I think I made it to Chapter Four that time. Everyone seems to really love it and I just can't get into it.

I didn't think the Viking books were that strong in the bodice ripping department, but my father was talking about how smutty this one book my mum was reading was. I asked her if I might know which one, when she told me it was Truly, Madly Viking I commented on how I'd loaned her the book. My dad (no prude btw) had to have his eyeballs pushed back in was the level of his shock.
Upon further reflection, I believe some are more so than others. I think it's less about the amount of ripping as it is about the intensity of those scenes. So, myabe not to everyone's taste lol

I'm definitely not a prude and I like a well written sex scene. I was just curious. :)

@Cristina I completely understand. I love the bantering between Cat and Bones, but it seems like the majority of PNR, especially of late, is vampires and more vampires. So I'll be definitely checking out some of these suggestions as well.

I know you mentioned PNR, rather than UF, but have you checked out Ilona Andrews's Kate Daniels series? There are vampires in it, but I'd call it on the "little" side and they aren't the usual vamps you'd see (when vamps are involved, they're mindless killing machines basically, no finesse, no thought processes really). The romance is with a lion shifter. I don't know if that's too close to the vampires, but that series is one of my favorites and I didn't see that anyone else had recommended it.

Also, Kate's a smart-ass, so there are some pretty funny moments.

OH! One more: have you checked out Darynda Jones's Charley Davidson Series? There are definitely some LOL moments in that one. Again, it's a series rather than a standalone PNR, but seven books in and there's not a vampire in sight.

Yes I've read and LOVED the Kate Daniels series and the Charley Davidson series (anxiously awaiting the next books). Thanks :)

Mercy Thompson, Demonica, Sookie Stackhouse, Jane True, The Dark Hunters, White Trash Zombie, Shifters Unbound, Immortal Guardians, Elemental Assassin, Bloodhound Files, Iron Druid, Dresden Files, Sentinel Wars, Lords of the Underworld, Fever, Deadtown, The Hollows, Demon Hunting Soccer Mom (lol), Edie Spence, InCryptid, Strange Neighbors, Demon Hunter, Downside Ghosts and probably 100 more that I've forgotten to list.

Rachel Vincent's Shifter series is on my list to read as well.

Christina--on the question about Sandra Hill's "Viking" series and bodice rippers. . . It depends on WHICH of her Viking series you're talking about. (And yes, why anyone would write 2 totally different series, and call the series Viking 1 and Viking 2, I do not know.)

The Viking 1 series tends to be more bodice ripper (and, frankly I didn't enjoy it at all.)

The Viking 2 series, of which The Last Viking is the first book in the series isn't really a bodice ripper. They do involve time travel, and I think that she's at about 15 or 16 in that series. There is also a fair bit of humour in this series, which I didn't notice as much in Viking 1.
