This book is set in the fictional rural Kentucky town of Port William. It covers the life of “Old Jack” Beechum over the course of a single day. By the end, we feel we know Old Jack well. He is a man of a past age, living through the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. We get to know what is important to him and how he would like to be remembered. It is easy to picture Jack’s farming life, and how he wished he could pass along his simple lifestyle to his daughter and her husband, but they are from a different generation and have different priorities. It was easy to picture Jack and his friends sitting on the porch chatting as the sun sets.
