Recommendation Index: 5 out of 5 Reading Index: 2 out of 5 Spice Index: non-existent (0 out of 5) Reactivity Warning and/or Mental Health Concern: There are scenes of sexual harassment and rape.
In 2023, it is a rarity to see women in science. Albeit it was even more rare in the 1950’s. Lessons in Chemistry is a powerful story of women empowering women to do extraordinary things. There is enough space for success to be shared, and Elizabeth Zott is a beautiful example of the power of being a woman.
Although the story takes place a few decades in the past, Zott’s experience as a woman, nonetheless a brilliant one, is unfortunately one that many women can still relate to. From being diluted to her looks, assumed to be unintelligent because of her gender, or her accomplishments attributed to her male partner, Elizabeth Zotts is a character that feels all too familiar. Despite the ridiculous nature of the societal pressures to conform to gender role assignments, she demonstrates unwavering grit to be true to herself - to be the scientist that she knows she is. However, she finds herself living a life that she didn’t want - a life that reminds her of her past. Lessons in Chemistry will light a fire in you to recommit yourself to your dreams. This is a 10 out of 10 read!
“Whenever you start doubting yourself”, she said, turning back to the audience, “whenever you feel afraid, just remember. Courage is the root of change - and change is what we’re chemically designed to do.” - Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
