Nancy | 2838 comments Fantasy author Sir Terry Pratchett has died aged 66, having had Alzheimer's disease for eight years.

"The world has lost one of its brightest, sharpest minds," said Larry Finlay of his publishing company, Transworld.

Best known for the Discworld series, Sir Terry wrote more than 70 books over his lengthy career.

He was first diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2007, but continued writing, completing his final book last summer.

The author died at home "with his cat sleeping on his bed, surrounded by his family," Mr Finlay said.

Nancy | 2838 comments It's an awful disease. My father-in-law had it. I'm ashamed I haven't read any of Pratchett's books yet.

Jason Bradley (slavetopassion) | 61 comments I've only read one. I need to read more.

It really is a terrible disease. Mark's mother has it now.

To be honest, I've only read 2. Because I'm a fiend for reading in order and my library doesn't have the 2nd Discworld book. (I read Thud! first, not even knowing it was part of the series, then checked out the first in the series. Have yet to get the 2nd.)

I'll have to make a point to read his books now.

C.J. Heath (CJHeath) The first I read was 'Pyramids'. It was the 7th Discworld book.
He didn't just write Discworld either. Cat owners will love 'The Unadulterated Cat'. Young at heart will love 'Diggers' - 'Truckers' - 'Wings' trilogy. Also 'The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents' is an all time favourite.
There are two sci-fi stories ('Dark Side of the Sun' and 'Strata') that don't have his unique humour but they're fun to read (and you get the very first hint of Discworld appearing in the mind of the author).
(I did once own 'Wrecks of Time', a 1965 New Worlds short story collection that included an 8 page short from Mr P himself. Sadly I needed the money some years ago and it went its own way on ebay; profitably but... I wish I'd never parted with it).

Terry Pratchett has been one of two of my favourite authors for a very long time (the other being the late David Gemmell). I'm going to miss his words and his characters. Such a unique mind and it's been a pleasure to follow his thoughts when pen met paper. Fascinating guy.
Missed deeply. RIP Sir Terry.

Greg C.J., I read The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents recently, and I thought it was great!
