15.10 Found in Translation

The United Nations was founded following the end of the Second World War, with a view to preventing future world wars. To date, 193 countries are party to the UN Charter – almost all of the world’s sovereign states.

The UN works in six official languages – English, Chinese, French, Russian, Arabic and Spanish. Read a book which was originally written in one of these six languages, excluding your native language(s) - i.e. if your native language is English, choose from Chinese, French, Russian, Arabic or Spanish; if your native language is Spanish, choose from Chinese, English, Arabic, Russian or French.

Examples: Doctor Zhivago (originally written in Russian)
The Shadow of the Wind (originally written in Spanish)
The Three-Body Problem (originally written in Chinese)

Required: State the language the book was originally published in and your native language(s). If the original publication language is not evident from the GR record, provide a reference.

Dee (austhokie) | 8964 comments i was going to ask about To Hold Up the Sky - its short stories all by the same author - but it looks like each one might have a different translator - if i include this review would it suffice?

As long as the short stories were all written in the same language (i.e. Chinese) then you're good. Who translated it is of less importance, the main thing is that there is a translator involved somewhere in this case. That review will work as a reference for the translations.

Paula S (paula_s) | 642 comments My native language is not on the list but there are languages on the list that I am able to read. Is the intention to read a translated book? If I read a book in the original language will that work if it is not my native language?

I'd say that works. You're being your own translator in that scenario.

Louise Just double checking my native language is Welsh, so I can read a book originally published in English?

Wanda (wanda71) | 1770 comments I would like to verify this book.

El viento conoce mi nombre-Isabel Allende

Both the English and Spanish editions were published on the same day. The author is a Chilean author. Her first books were published in Spanish but she now lives in the United States.

Sorry Wanda, my brain's being a little fuzzy today. Are you wanting this verified as originally in Spanish or as both Spanish/English because of the dual publication?

message 14: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda71) | 1770 comments Not to worry--my brain stays on a high "fuzzy " level.

I wanted to verify it for Spanish.

That's fine, publication language duly noted as Spanish. Just drop a link back to here when you claim so I remember I approved it!
