A book you didn’t expect to like but did?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Mirror Mirror by Gregory Maguire

I didn't particularly like Wicked or Confessions, so it was a nice surprise when I really got into this shorter fairy-tale retelling.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

"1984." I thought it would be similar to "Brave New World," and I hated that book. I was surprised at how much I enojyed it though.

message 9: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (anovelglimpse) The Hunger Games. I thought it would be too depressing.

message 10: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 241 comments Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott.

I'm not usually into "classics" because I find them dry, and hard to get through; but I really liked "Little Women"! It's not written in that lofty, European, intellectual way (no offense to anyone who likes that kind of thing!) that I find so dense and confusing. :)

I also liked "Girl Interrupted", by Susanna Kaysen; a lot more than I thought I would.
I don't really read a lot of books on psychology, or mental illness because I can't stand any character (on TV or in books) who has depression, or is cutting themselves...I just find it hard to deal with. ("Speak" would be one exception to this) But I was pleasantly surprised with "Girl Interrupted", and I liked the movie, too! Not the most uplifting one, but still good.

message 11: by Madge (new)

Madge (madge_the_bibliomaniac) | 147 comments Jane Eyre! I read Wuthering Heights and Pride & Prejudice before it, and didn't care for either. I expected Jane Eyre to be very similar, but I was pleasantly surprised.

message 12: by Monica (new)

Monica Miller (monicamiller20) | 7 comments Jane Eyre, too. A young-adult one: The Catastrophic History of You and Me.

message 18: by Amphitrite (new)

Amphitrite (ravenclaweruditedemigodselected) | 32 comments Percy Jackson series, The Hunger Games, and The Host. I thought the Hunger Games was going to be too gory, I thought Percy Jackson wasn't going to be nearly as good as the movie, and I hated sci-fi and the Twilight series so I didn't think I'd love the Host. Now they are my favorite books ever!!:)

Peg - reading heals | 17 comments Gone Girl. Pleasantly surprised.

message 20: by BeeXWitch (new)

BeeXWitch Splintered, I thought that I wouldn't like it at all but I loved it so much.

message 26: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) There are many. The Kite Runner, The Hunger Games (all three books)...

message 27: by Blake (new)

Blake Murray 14 by Peter Clines. now I did read this via audible, however I actually enjoyed the slowness of the books, I always listen while I get ready for school so it is just great to hear a slow mystery, it's also sci-fi novel which I don't usually like as much, but that one was okay. i recommend reading it on audible though

message 28: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 42 comments Cinder, but that's only because of the hype behind the series as well as with fairy tales re-telling's, they are usually good/amazing or not good at all so I'm always weary. But I LOVED this book, it one of my favorites!

Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer

message 29: by Emma (new)

Emma (e_loves_writing) | 133 comments I didn't think that I was going to like A Wrinkle in Time. I knew it was a classic and that many others enjoyed it I just thought it was going to be too childish but I ended up really getting into it and could barely put it down!

message 30: by Lauri (new)
