I lost so many books in water damage crisis. I wish I recalled more, but I had 3 or 4 paperbacks that were very thick. The stories were compelling, and I remember the son fighting to keep his father's and then his kingdom intact and on the side of good. He later married and had children - so a very generational saga. I loved them, but cannot remember titles or authors and wish I could read them again.

Covers had people in armor with romantic landscapes and castles - if I remember correctly.

I took your suggestion and looked up the cover art, because I’m a visual learner. It wasn’t my series, but it inspired me to google based on image searches, and I figured it out!

Mine was The Dragon Prince series by Melanie Rawn, which clocks in at 560 pages compared to Williams 668. Her first book in the trilogy was written in 1988.
