Robert Zwilling | 2912 comments The giant wind turbines, that Siemens Wind Power which merged with Spanish turbine maker Gamesa sells, can experience mechanical problems which can cost up to 1.7 million dollars to repair. It's estimated that as many as 1,000 of the big turbines might need repairing. If the wind exceeds a certain speed, the turbines can experience excessive vibration.

Sweden uses the giant turbines and when the wind exceeds a certain speed Sweden turns their turbines off.

While this seems like an isolated problem, it is not. Texas experienced problems with their alternative energy systems when the temperature got too cold.

Most of the buildings currently in use (residential, commercial, industrial) were not built to withstand the new more intense climate standards. Eventually all buildings will be tested by the weather.

Insurance companies are already retreating from certain high risk areas, which used to be ordinary locations. They are also raising their rates to replace damage done by the weather.

The turbines can be fixed as needed or fixed in advance. Our buildings can not be fixed in advance without spending a lot of money. The weather is forcing decisions to be made which can be addressed, now, later, as the need arises, or never.

The cost to fix all the turbines now would cost Siemens approximately 1.7 billion dollars. They can do as Sweden does and simply shut the turbines down when a certain wind speed is reached. Or they can fix them as they break down.
