°~Amy~° (amybooksit) For those of you new to KIS/BIO, here's what it is all about:

We started this list in 2019 due to a lot of comments about the prompts being "too easy" or "WAY too difficult" to fill. We've all felt that way about a prompt (or 20) at different times so this board was set up to brainstorm ideas to make every prompt accessible to EVERYONE. On this list you will find options and ideas to make every prompt easier, or harder depending on your preference. Personally, I jump around depending on my mood. Sometimes I am feeling like I want to spend hours researching a possible book, and sometimes I just want to grab something as quick as possible. However you do it, just have fun!

Here are the terms we use on this page:

KIS: The "Keep It Simple" option is for times when you feel a topic is just too difficult to find a good book for. For topics you might want to make a tad bit easier on yourself, go for these options. You've probably got a couple of good choices on your bookshelf already!

BIO: The "Bring It On" option is for when you really, really want to challenge yourself. These might require more research, which can be a lot of fun, when you are in the mood. You might have to go hunt down a book, you might have to steal one from a friend (don't do that, friends get cranky when you steal their books but you might have to ask nicely to borrow a book), or you might have to visit your library to find something to fit.....basically, BIO is meant to make things a bit more challenging then just grabbing the next book off the top of your tbr pile.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel to post them below. The first 4 comment boxes are reserved for our list as it grows, and grows and GROWS!

message 13: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3268 comments My sticking point with the "connected to" prompt is that it's so vague, and I feel like anything can connect to another book if I try hard enough.

What I usually do to make it a little harder for myself (so I guess this could be a BIO option) is: a book that connects to something you read in 2023 in at least 2 different ways. So it could be, for example, on the same topic and published in the same year, or both books have a character with the same name (but not a series with the same character) and they are also from the same genre. For example, The Night Swim and The Girl on the Train are both thrillers that have a main character named Rachel.

I love that idea Rachel! Because I read over one hundred books a year, I can connect just about any book to something I read this year. Obviously someone who reads less will struggle more. For me, making two connections is a better challenge.

I would definitely agree with that. I also think a minimum of seven words for a BIO. No subtitle and at least 7 words is how I will be tackling the prompt anyway.

BIO for the 6+ words is not counting articles (a, an, the) or other uncapitalized words (of, in, at, etc.). That may be a bit English-centric, but I thought it would present an extra challenge.

That's a great BIO.

How about alternate spellings: won, too, to, for, fore, ate

You mean homophones?

Great.

Homonyms have to have the exact same spelling but mean entirely different things :)

Nina (ninakins) | 334 comments Here’s some BIO options I’ve come up with (though some of them may be a little too BIO)

A book published in 2024
By an author you’ve never read before

A book related to the phrase "It's Raining Cats and Dogs"
A book that involves cats and/or dogs literally falling and/or flying

A book related to night
No vampires or werewolves

A book with a title that ends in A, T or Y
Also starting with A, T, or Y

A book set in one of the 25 most beautiful cities in the world
…where your own native language is not the primary spoken language

A book with a number in the title
Must be some specific kind of number, e.g., even, odd, prime, fraction, imaginary, irrational

A book related to the name of one of Snow White's seven dwarfs
Related to at least two of the dwarfs

A book with a single word title
The word must be from a language other than your own native language

A book that is not a novel
…or any other genre that you frequently read

Love this one! I like some of the others as well, but since I am a bit of a number nerd this one instantly appealed to me. Among other numbers, I'm partial to primes, but I haven't memorized them nearly as far as some people I've heard of.

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) Updated to here! I've been away for a few days so this update took a hot minute to complete. I hope I didn't miss anything. Please let me know if I did.

I've added the Poll 4 Multiweek and Poll 5 winners. I'm looking forward to all your ideas for these great prompts!

Amy (Other Amy) | 703 comments I don't have a lot of KIS/BIO ideas firing about for most of the recent prompts voted in, but I do have a BIO I hope to do:

A book with a secondary color on the cover (orange, green or purple)

BIO:
- A book with ONLY (or mostly) orange, green, AND purple on the cover (only those colors, and including all three of those colors)

I'm not sure I'll find such a book in the wild, but I'm going to try.

(The reason I'm thinking about this was the "4 or more colors" prompt we had this year, where I found that it was ridiculously easy to fill with more than four colors, but only four colors was actually somewhat difficult, but not annoyingly so.)

message 42: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) I think that is a brilliant approach to the prompt. I might take a peek at my shelves to see if anything fits those criteria!

Amy (Other Amy) | 703 comments I'm looking at my shelves now and beginning to think just finding a book with all three is plenty BIO! LOL.

Yes, this is brilliant! I love to make prompts extra-challenging and this is going to be so helpful.

That's a great BIO if I were to choose to go that route for that one!

Dixie (dixietenny) | 1106 comments Poll 2 #1: A book with a title that ends in A, T or Y

My personal BIO for prompts that include several options is to read a book for each one. So for this year's location ATY prompt, I read books set in Algeria, Turkey, and Yorkshire.

So a BIO for this prompt could be read three books, one for each letter. (Or however you want to word it.)

One of those letters in both the author's name and the title.
