Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn - 3* - My Review

In this short epistolary novel, the residents of Nollop, an island country, have dedicated a statue to the creator of the sentence, "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog," containing the twenty-six letters of the English alphabet. Tiles begin to fall off the statue, and the High Council views it as a sign that the fallen letters should be banished. They pass a law and establish severe penalties for the use of banned letters. People begin to turn in neighbors for transgressions. As more letters are lost, the characters find creative ways to express themselves. As the letters are banned, they no longer appear in the text of the book, creating quite the quirky and unusual reading experience. It is satire about censorship and abuse of power. It engages the brain in the manner of solving word puzzles while making a point.

I loved this! So clever an approach.

It was cute but I felt like I got the point well before the end.

I felt pretty much the same.

I really enjoyed this. So clever. It did go on too long I also thought - considering how short it is that's quite a comment.

Toward the end, his conceit meant he was running out of letters to use in writing the book.
