TJ Anderson (tjanderson) | 16 comments Does anyone know what's going on with "Shadows in flight"? The book that has rumored to be an OSC project for quit a while, and is supposed to connect "children of the mind" and "shadow of the giant". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadows_...

Kyle (isamurai) | 1 comments All I know is what is on that Wikipedia page. I don't really follow OSC's website enough or stalk him so I don't know much info, but I'm highly looking forward to it.

Theresa | 12 comments I also heard about it and hope it comes to reality asap. I love the world he created and was saddened to only speculate about Bean and his children. Who else felt that way about the end of the Shadow series?

According to his web site he has 3 works in progress. Pathfinder a new YA series, Bully and the Beast based on his short story and Rasputin the sequel to Mayflower.

No information on any other Ender books but these are just the works in progress.

TJ Anderson (tjanderson) | 16 comments mike, thanks for the info. That probably means that he's thought about writing another book enough to have mentioned it at some point in time, but not enough to actually start writing more than snippets. Which means that by the time he finishes writing his other works in progress he may be 'retired' before he really gets around to writing it.

He seems like he is really invovled in too many other things to focus on Novels (I think his major preocupation is getting Enders Games made into a movie). He is not even really getting one novel out a year.

Nathan (nthnlwly) I just got an e-mail from Goodreads saying that Shadows in Flight is coming out this month. So I put a hold on it at the library!

TJ Anderson (tjanderson) | 16 comments apparently it's already out. But still the best news I've heard all week.

Staci Johnson Not on Kindle till 02/2013

message 12: by TJ (new)

TJ Anderson (tjanderson) | 16 comments it might be worth waiting for on kindle. It is actually surprisingly short for an OSC book. Less than 250 pages and there isn't a lot of text per page. Probably only half the word count of Ender's Game, if not less. I can see now why he decided to make the reunion into two books.

message 13: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) I read it in about two days. And loved it. I'd definitely recommend reading it. It's very short and doesn't take long.

Just finished and now I want to go back and re read the Speaker for the Dead books because I see the two series coming together.

Maybe someone can help. Wasn't there a scene where Jane takes a group to a planet that is populated by a species with extreme technological advancements that they could not make contact with? Could this be Beans descendants?

Also what did happen to the Hive Queen that Ender had? It has been so long since I read those that I do not remember all of it.

I am not thrilled that Card changed the paradigm again by making us question the motives of the Hive Queen that Ender has. It worked really well between Enders Game and Speaker for the Dead. I guess that it is another way to prolong the series. The reuniting of Enders and Beans stories (even though they are both dead) should make an good conclusion to the overall story arc.

Overall it is a great book and reminded me of why I like OSC so much.

I am going to have to plan on re reading the Speaker series soon.

TJ Anderson (tjanderson) | 16 comments Mike, I don't think anything has happened with the Hive Queen Ender had, I think that's the point of the next book. There are no males to populate a new bugger world. But like you it's been too long since I've touched the speaker series.

Just finished re reading Speaker For the Dead. I had forgotten how amazing that book is but it started filling in some of the gaps that I had forgotten.

At the end of the book, Ender releases the Hive Queen and she lays her eggs (no mention if they at fertilized or not).

As I pick up the next two books it will be interesting to refresh on where the Descolada comes from and maybe get some ideas on how Enders children and Beans Descendents come back together.

I feel really dumb after my question about the hive queen. She alive well and already building colony ships in Xenocide.

Just finished this one and it is much more cerebral than Speaker for the Dead. Not much action and a lot of talking, explaining and trying to figure things out. Still a very great read but where I found my self already knowing the answers I got very impatient.

Also the concern that Bean had about the hive queen in Shadow's in Flight also seems like a non issue as it is addressed in Xenocide. The Hive Queen tried to make Ender a drone but he had too much will power.

Time to wrap up this series as I wait for what ever story OSC comes up with to bridge Enders and Beans stories.

Phil | 8 comments I really liked Shadows in Flight as a short story, but it was too damn short. I just wanted to keep reading more. The ending feels a bit rushed, but otherwise, it's one of my favorites. I love the claustrophobic feel and in-depth look at how the Formics function, with an emphasis on xenobiology. As a biologist myself, I found it fascinating. It's a good passing-of-the-torch book, and makes you feel the characters (who resemble another set of siblings). A good set-up book.
