new_user Wow, that really is ridiculous in this day. He should definitely be fired. But at least they can find someone else to validate their certificate-- like a real judge, LOL. WTF is this small time justice junk? JK, JK. But that is ridiculous.

Pretty ridiculous in this day and age. Not surprising though. I have encountered people who don't believe in racial mixing, as if it were splicing dog and cat DNA or some mad science experiment. (Rolling eyes).

Jenn | 126 comments I don't have a problem so much with his belief because it does not suprise me, he is intitled to believe what ever stupid BS his little mind can come up with, but I do have a problem with that fact he is an government official imposing on others. I am a doctor if I EVER imposed my beliefs on anyone or even acted as if I did not approve of someones life style they would have my F-ing head as well as my liscense. And believe me I have seen some crap. Sorry but I am hot!!

message 6: by new_user (new)

new_user Well, of course. He's acting in an official capacity, so this can't be allowed to continue. There's not much room for "discretion" in marriage licenses.

I can understand completely where you're coming from. He is denying people civil rights. He's going to face the music for it. Hugs, Jenn.

message 8: by new_user (new)

new_user Yeah, there's this myth that racism is "over," but it's funny, I was conducting a survey some time back for a research project using a social distance scale, basically measuring the distance that a participant wants between his or her self and members of certain groups. It was very telling how many people answered that they weren't comfortable working with x group or comfortable working with but not marrying into the family or as neighbors (those were among the shortest "distance" options between people), etc.

I agree, Maya. Those true believers are the really scary ones. The ignorant can be educated. But the zealots won't change no matter what (unless something supernatural happens in their hearts).

It's really funny how people can be. They are racist, but they will have people of color cleaning their houses and raising their children. Go figure.

I don't know, the ignorant are an awful lot of work. LOL.

message 14: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL. Maybe he thought he was being clever referring to segregated bathrooms or something. So typical.

message 15: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 126 comments Yes, he is surely stuck in the past. How many biracial children are going through the BS he is talking about? My stepson clearly looks white and has never had a problem that has had a major impact on his life, my daughter looks black but definitely mixed and she fits in everywhere she goes. They have questions at first, but after the initial curiosity around age five or so, it has never come up. Maybe because we never lived in Backward Louisiana (sorry for the insult I have a good friend who lives there and I would clearly let her use my bathroom as well). Clearly there are still racial problems in this world, but what world is he referring to? And the divorce BS, if that were the case no one should be allowed a marriage license considering almost 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Hollywood stars should be turned down in droves, better yet all of them should be sterilized to protect the children. I just imagine that he use to relish outing blacks that use to pose as white in his day. And that bathroom comment, yeah people let dogs sleep in their beds, but at the end of the day, they treat them like dogs, so yes judge, you are a racist. I would bet money his judgment is only against white/black couples. Why is this the first couple to step up?

message 16: by new_user (new)

new_user That's a really good point, Jenn. Why is this the first couple to step up? I think other couples probably just dismissed him and went on with their plans, but he is acting as an agent of the government, so it is important to point out. Not to mention, acts of racism need to be recorded. A problem can't be remedied if it's denied as "resolved" or "history."

I'm wondering if this is the first couple to question having their license request denied. Or, perhaps in the past he's disguised his rejection as something else making whichever couple feel he was acting in their best interest. I don't know..... This story is so disturbing, I wonder how many other couples have been denied in other areas. I'm just glad that if two people truly are in love, and want to spend the rest of their lives together, that the "legalities" can't stop them from at least doing that. It just makes me ill to think that this judge, and others like him, think they can decide who can, and cannot get married. He most likely doesn't even personally know any interracial couples, let alone any children of mixed race. He's just talking out of his a@@ and saying the things that he and his ignorant friends have said and thought behind closed doors, and now his ignorance/ arrogance has come to light. Now, I'm neither a history buff, or know the law, but didn't the supreme court rule in a case regarding the Loving's, a wm and bw, that wanted to marry back in the 1960's? I thought I'd read once that their case set a precedent to abolish state laws all across the country that made interracial marriage illegal. If that's the case then this judge broke the law and then tried to justify it. I'd love to follow up and see what happens to him.

I live in Louisiana.

It's sad that a lot of people calls themselves Christian and have a problem with interracial marriage. Some of them goes a far as to say God is against this. Well, I would love to know what Bible have they been reading, because God is not against interracial marriage.

Moses was married to a black woman. Abraham's oldest son was biracial. The bible is full of biracial children.

People need to get a life.

A lot of people that are racist. Yes, all race has some people that are racist. I will use the white/black example in this case. Many whites that hate interracial marriage, have children that go out and marry a black person. The females are faster to marry a black man, than the white son is. He can be in love with a black woman, but is scared of what his parents will say. The same goes for black parents. Their son would go out and marry a white woman in a heart beat. Not too many of their daughters, because a lot of them may like white guys, but would not go there, because they don't want to upset their parents.

It's sad that that a lot of parents disown their children for marrying a different race. I have people that come to my church, who parents have disown them for marrying outside of their race.

Mexican woman married black man. Her family disowned her.

Indian woman marries black man. Her family disowned her.

I'm not 100% black. I'm part Indian and I am proud of that.

Seriously though I am not trying to put down the South. I am from the South and I am trying to go back further south one of these days. My parents lived in Oakdale La and as small as that was I never ran into anything so crazy. I love the South, it is just crap like this that make us look like backward crazies. I have a friend from Minnesota and I was trying to explain that the South was not so bad, and guess who called... yeah, you becha'.

My mom was born in Alabama but grew up in Chicago. Chicago was very segregated (de facto). She had to walk through a White neighborhood to get to class and she got spit on and called names. So the North isn't/wasn't much better.

I think we have the same gift. Most times I do not even notice unless the person I am with says did you see the way they looked at us and I am like "who?". Or I can look them dead in the eye with a warm smile until they back down. I have not encountered hostile people only people who think I am going to shy away out of shame or something. Once I look them in the eye and smile or say how are you doing they kind of back down. Don't know where I get this boldness, I'm not hardly big enough to whoop anybodies a$$.

--I dealt with a lot of good old types when I was in school. They were wondering what I was doing there, but I did my thing and got my degree and moved on. There are places in Texas I won't go, and certainly I always take care when I am in the smaller towns. You never know. There are still violent and ignorant people around who think killing a person of color is not wrong or immoral.
