Hi friends,

As we head into August, I've been thinking of ideas for our Fall and Winter reads. Locked room mysteries are a subgenre that has always interested me, but I find that I really haven't read very many. They also seem like fun reads during those cozy cooler days and nights ahead. I've listed some potential reads below, for you all to peruse and see if there are any that are too hard to find. Let me know your thoughts.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue, Edgar Allan Poe - considered by many to be the first modern detective story.

Bloodhounds, Peter Lovesey (Peter Diamond #4)

The Mystery of the Yellow Room (Joseph Rouletabille #1), Gaston Leroux

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (Hercule Poirot #4), Agatha Christie

The Decagon House Murders, Yukito Ayatsuji, Ho-Ling Wong (Translator)

The Honjin Murders (Detective Kosuke Kindaichi #1), Seishi Yokomizo, Louise Heal Kawai (Translator)

In the Dark, Loreth Anne White

Snowblind, (Dark Iceland #1), Ragnar Jónasson, Quentin Bates (Translator)

The Three Coffins (aka The Hollow Man), John Dickson Carr

I've read a few of these but they are definitely worth reading again.

Hi friends,

Checking back in to see if there are any of these books that are tough for people to get. If so, I'll pull them from the list. I will then post our list. Let's plan on starting with Murders In The Rue Morgue, the OG. I think that one should be pretty accessible.

Happy reading!
Lisa

I keep trying to join for one (or more) of the collection books but I haven't so that this with a grain of salt.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue, Edgar Allan Poe I've not read much Poe so this would be great for me.

The Mystery of the Yellow Room (Joseph Rouletabille #1), Gaston Leroux & The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (Hercule Poirot #4), Agatha Christie are awesome books.

I don't know any of the rest but I'd be willing to try if I can get it together and start reading like I used to. le sigh

Great, everyone! I’ll have the discussion thread for Rue Morgue posted tomorrow. Apologies for the delay, I’ve been out of town the past week and between spotty internet and plain ol vacation hijinks, I’m behind ☺️

OK, first discussion posted. Since Rue Morgue is very short (38 pages), would we like to do two in September? The Mystery of the Yellow Room is pretty short at 190 pages.

Thanks, everyone! I posted a thread for the Mystery of the Yellow Room as well. We can just read them both in September at our own pace.

How about Bloodhounds? Forgive me, I just realized that I never posted a definite order past September. I’ll get that up tomorrow as well as our discussion thread. I’m sorry guys, crazy couple of weeks.

OK, friends, I posted a thread for Bloodhounds, which will be our October read. And how does this sound for the rest of our fall/winter schedule? I doubled up in a couple of months, as these all sound so interesting in different ways, and a few people have gotten their hands on all of them already. I paired up the shorter ones. Please feel free to join discussion for both or just one.

NOV: In the Dark, Loreth Anne White

DEC: The Decagon House Murders (House Murders #1), Yukito Ayatsuji, Ho-Ling Wong (Translator)

DEC: The Honjin Murders (Detective Kosuke Kindaichi #1), Seishi Yokomizo, Louise Heal Kawai (Translator)

JAN: Snowblind, (Dark Iceland #1), Ragnar Jónasson, Quentin Bates (Translator

FEB: The Hollow Man (Dr. Gideon Fell #6), John Dickson Carr

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving. I just posted discussion threads for December - and we have two reads to look forward to. I thought we'd start with The Decagon House Murders and try to finish mid-Dec, and then start The Honjin Murders. Of course, participate in any order or manner you see fit :) I'm really excited to read these two!

Karen (karen94066) | 364 comments Only the Honjin Murders is available at my library, and only one copy with 3 holds. I will probably get it in 2024. I hope others have more luck.

I was trying to get my hands on the edition with the fantastic cover! No such luck unless I buy it. There's another version that seems to be more plentifully available at my library, so I'm glad for that.

Susan_MG | 274 comments I have my copy of the Honjin Murders from my local library. It’s a Pushkin Vertigo paperback published in 2019 and it doesn’t have a fantastic cover. This book appears to have never been checked out of this library which makes me sad.

Karen, that was our October read. I had the thread archived, but just removed it from archive and placed it back in our group of discussion links, if you want to read comments and add your thoughts.
