The Abduction of Julia (Rogues, #1) by Karen Hawkins
The Abduction of Julia by Karen Hawkins

Join us in reading this HR that features the theme Marriage of Convenience. Happy reading!

Synopsis:

What can a respectable Regency miss do when kidnapped by a nobleman intent on marriage? Why, marry him, of course.

Julia Frant has secretly loved Alec MacLean, the wild Viscount Hunterston from afar. So when he accidentally snatches her instead of her lovely, scheming cousin for an elopement to Gretna Green, Julia leaps at the chance to make her passionate dreams come true.
Alec's in no position to quibble: if he doesn't marry by midnight and live scandal-free for a year, he loses his inheritance. At least marriage with do-gooder Julia will guarantee his fortune. But as his plain brown wren transforms herself into an elegant swan, Alec suddenly can't stay away from his last-minute wife---and when he kisses her, the inheritance is the last thing on his mind. Unfortunately, scandal can occur from the best of intentions...and Julia is never short of good intentions!

Oleander | 266 comments I like Julia's courage and determination but boy is she naive. I think both she and Alec have a bad case of TSTL.

Oleander | 266 comments So the writing style is good and easy to read but I just can't get past the TSTL. Worst case ever. I finished the book and feel like I need a mental scrub. Like maybe I need to watch some lectures or TED talks to remind myself that there is intelligent life on earth.

Lauren | 1387 comments I love this author, but I didn't like this book when I read it 10 years ago. I haven't decided if I want to try it again

Peaktopeak | 34 comments LOL Wow, Oleander, hope those TED talks restored your faith in intelligent life!!

Wwwweeelllll, I didnt actually see Julia as TSTL. Naive, yes, and overly optimistic, most definitely. But, you know, she showed tolerance and understanding toward people. I liked that. I wondered why her do-gooder intentions were so deep seated.

Alec was a little stubborn, but his servants were hilarious. I might look for Wexford's story.

The author is pretty middle of the road for me. I think I read most of the Princes series. On the whole, this was a sweet, fairly diverting read for me.

Oleander | 266 comments To be accurate, I thought Alec had TSTL worse than Julia. But I'm glad you found the story ok, Peak. :-)

Jan (jan130) | 2673 comments Hmm. TSTL is usually a no-go zone for me. I find the trope where a character has to get married instantly or lose their inheritance a bit hard to swallow as well. Glad you enjoyed, Peak, but I think I might skip this one.

Peaktopeak | 34 comments Sure, I get it. Everyone knows the elements that work or don't work for them. :-)
