message 1: by Regan (new)

Regan I listened to 50% of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (only cuz I was on a road trip) audio version and I was bored out of my mind… don’t think I can finish it and its making me never want to try listening to one again! Thoughts?

leila ⋆.˚౨ৎ | 62 comments ohh i see what u mean Regan! im not a fan of audiobooks i still prefer to read books on my own. tbh i only heard an audiobook once and i found it boring so i stayed away frm them

bailey grace (baileygr4ce) | 17 comments i like to listen to audiobooks when i drive or when i’m at school just so i don’t have to worry about carrying a book. but i love carrying books too. it really just depends on what works best for you!

Julia (Darlingstern's version) I personally can't listen to them bc I get too distracted

message 5: by angie (new)

angie (glovesbooks) | 4 comments I avoided audio books before because I swore I could never get into them. I listen to a lot of podcasts at work so I figured I give audiobooks a shot and actually really liked it. I think audio books are great for when you’re doing something that’s a routine or repetitive, it’s very hard to just shit there and listen to an audiobook.

message 6: by angie (new)

angie (glovesbooks) | 4 comments It also depends on the persons voice, your brain may just not have liked that person lol

rashmi (hiatus) | 23 comments i listen to audiobooks too, not all the time because it gets annoying but its really nice because i like multitasking and cant only ever do one thing so i draw a lot while listening to audiobooks and i feel much more productive at the end of the day than if i had just read a book :)

message 8: by eddie (new)

eddie | 9 comments I listen to them 90% of the time and have been listening for years so I've gotten used to it I do everything while listening, including work, daily chores, even driving I enjoy them tremendously and even follow narrators now

message 9: by Sabi (new)

Sabi | 37 comments Yes all the way! Both of the book reading mediums are great!

message 10: by Hailey (last edited Aug 06, 2023 05:18PM) (new)

Hailey Sawyer | 33 comments Hello Regan. For me, I like to listen to audiobooks from time to time and the ones that I've ended up enjoying the most are the ones where the narrator actually sounds like they're enjoying the story they're reading and, if it's a story told in first person, fits the character.

As an example, there's this audiobook version of The Catcher in The Rye that I highly recommend: (https://soundcloud.com/stephen-heintz...)

Aditi ~ readwaditi (readwaditi) Nah not really for me

message 12: by ➺ kath [ia] (new)

➺ kath [ia] (kathxarchives) I've listened to them a couple times but personally hate them, as I'm an incredibly fast reader and can finish 3 pages in the span it takes the narrator to read one. so if you're a fast reader, I don't recommend, however, it's all up to you!

message 13: by Julia (new)

Julia | 12 comments I personally don’t like like listening to audio books bc I get easily distracted and then I am not really focused on the book and I can’t imagine how the world in the book looks like, and I can’t tab cute moments bc I don’t have my book with me

message 14: by Judy (new)

Judy no ... I can't listen without seeing the words in front of me

message 15: by bianca (new)

bianca | 3 comments no, i can’t imagine the environment and characters in the same way and i get bored easily because i find the narrator to often have a dull voice and no emotion if that makes sense (depends on the narrator obviously but that has been my experience)

message 16: by bookworm (new)

bookworm (bookworm-) | 5 comments not a huge fan - I get less into the story because it feels less real (it's hard to explain) and also I don't pay attention (I also get this problem when people read out loud, especially if I have the book in front of me - I'll tune back into whatever the person's saying and realise I'm like 10 pages ahead). I did find an audiobook pretty useful when reading Shakespeare for school - I was having trouble telling the characters apart, paying attention, and understanding what was happening, so having the sound playing while I read helped a bit

message 17: by Niranjana (new)

Niranjana Prakash | 27 comments nope not for me

message 18: by Britt (new)

Britt | 11 comments I like audiobooks for biographies and nonfiction, but hate them for fiction

Kenzie! (Profesional book nerd :D ) You just need to find a good audiobook speaker! I listened to Pretty's and I was bored out of my mind.

message 20: by Jenna :) (new)

Jenna :) | 30 comments I just love having the physical copy too much

message 21: by xScaredyCat (new)

xScaredyCat | 11 comments Got to love audiobooks this year, i do still love the physical copys, especially for interesting books but as my eyes and neck already start hurting after a few hours and books which aren't very interesting for some parts of the book can be quite painful to read till it gets to more interesting parts. Audiobooks solved that problem for me, i can just listen to a book if my neck hurts or if I want to do some housework while 'reading'. Making the reading speed faster also seems to motivate my brain and not having to read the boring parts myself makes them more pleasant. Also they help me with my language learning as I often find books more interesting than podcasts.

i cant focus while listening to books and doing other things, but i also cant sit still listening to books :)

I know a lot of readers listen to audio books, I have tried several, but find while listening my mind wonders or I get very easily distracted. Unless you get an audio book with amazing narration. A lot of the narration on some really great books I found very monotone and would just put you to sleep. Hence why I can not bring myself to join audible. I am my most happy with a physical book in my hands.

message 25: by Melinda (new)

Melinda | 9 comments I couldn’t get through my household chores without audiobooks! They allow me to zone out into a book while doing boring stuff like laundry and cleaning. I also love listening to them while driving. They make the time fly by.

message 26: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccamontgomery) I love audio books. They keep my mind occupied while doing chores around the house or any activity that I can just zone out and listen. However, they do need a good narrator. If you don't enjoy the person reading it, then it can be painful. I enjoy both mediums, but a good narrator can really bring a well written story to life.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't like audiobooks, I just get distracted by other things and forget to listen. Also, they're so slow. I can read several chapters in the time it would take to listen to one. For example, in The Hobbit, chapter one is like an hour long! I could read that in less than 20 minutes.

message 28: by Austin (Weird) (new)

Austin (Weird) (weirdwashere1) | 4 comments Mostly depends on the narrator, but I usually love the audiobooks.

message 29: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Barrowes | 1 comments It totally depends on the Audiobook. I always enjoyed all of Orson Scott Card's audiobooks because he often wrote specifically for that medium. I also like Sandman in its immersive audiobook format with all the actors and sound fx. But there are definitely a lot of audiobooks that are too slow and boring for me to follow.

message 30: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 2 comments Yes! While driving or exercising.

The only reason I am able to "read" as many books as I do is because of Audiobooks. They allow me to get through books while I'm doing other things like driving, cooking, working out etc. They are my go to! 🎧 🫶🏼

Me too. I always have 2 books going at a time. One audiobook and one on my e-reader.

message 34: by Angie (new)

Angie Marquez | 18 comments I listen to audiobooks all the time

message 35: by Michelle (new)

Michelle V | 4 comments No? lol I haven’t tried it out.

✩°。⋆。˚⋆✮Lynn✮⋆˚。⋆。°✩ I don't like audio books, I like to imagine the characters voices in my head. Audio books don't really give me the ability to do that. It's almost as if it is limiting my imagination.

message 37: by Judy (new)

Judy I don't really like audiobooks. i can't comprehend what they're saying until I can see the words anyway.

message 38: by Maixpaix (last edited Oct 23, 2023 11:11PM) (new)

Maixpaix I prefer "real" books or my kindle, but I do listen to audiobooks at work and when I cook etc.. When I need my hands for other tasks.
If the book is engaging, I'll end up with 2x speed cause I can't get through it fast enough.

I depens on the narrator of course, if they are monotone and unengaging, I can't stand it.

message 39: by Jeanna (new)

Jeanna Smith | 13 comments It took me a couple tries to get into Audiobooks. But I do love them. It's great to listen in the car or when I'm cleaning the house. But I still read on my ebook most of the time.

✮ ⋆ ˚。 ᗩᑌᗷᖇIE ⋆。°✩ | 51 comments I can listen to audio books, but I find it hard to keep myself listening if I’m just sitting. If I’m going to listen I’m gonna have to be cleaning or following along with an actual copy. So I’d say I’m about 50/50 on audio books

message 41: by Meg (new)

Meg (meaganilsley) I think audiobooks have their time and place, and what that time and place is depends on the consumer. For me, I like audiobooks (and podcasts) when I am gardening or cleaning as it gives me something to focus on when I am doing a task I find mindless or boring without noise (I also sometimes listen to them on the bus when my eyes are acting up and reading is not viable).

I have often found books I don't enjoy reading for some reason or another are easier to consume in audio format with the right narrator, so sometimes if I find a book hard to read, I will listen to it instead. Though I also love them when I'm unable to read (eyes being difficult, migraines, etc.) as well, as I can still consume books.

message 42: by Emily Doll (new)

Emily Doll (emilydolltvd) Not for me. I have to read. maybe if I was stuck in a car for 8 hours alone, but I prefer reading and getting lost in it.

message 43: by Honey (new)

Honey Absolutely yes! The audiobook experience helped me fall in love with books 📚

message 44: by Charlie (new)

Charlie Spring | 216 comments I like it but I prefer to read books with my eyes!

message 45: by Zaii (new)

Zaii depends on the readers voice

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

I think it depends on the type of books for me. Anything poetry loses its magnitude when you can't see the words, but novels I think are still nice to listen to. I also like that I can do stuff I don't wanna do while listening to it and it doesn't suck so bad anymore

message 47: by Yoyo (new)

Yoyo | 11 comments no because it picks a voice and I like imagining it in my head and if the audiobook has a bad voice it ruins it kinda and also it's harder for me to really get absorbed and also I can't go at my own pace

message 48: by Evan (new)

Evan Carey | 99 comments I do really love audiobooks! There so relaxing sometimes. And when I'm busy but still wanna read a book I can just listen to an audiobook.

message 49: by 〰️Beth〰️ (new)

〰️Beth〰️ (x1f4a0bethx1f4a0) | 48 comments 95% No , most of the voices are annoying to me and draw my focus away from what the author has written. Occasionally an author who narrates their own work or another voice “actor” will allow me to enjoy the story. Mostly I will read books myself and the audios I have are ignored or used as a sedative to put me to sleep.
