It's now time to get ready to vote for our next set of prompts! The thread will be open for at least 24 hours before the poll gets posted. This is a good opportunity to ask any question you may have regarding the prompts, do some research, or ask for recommendations.

Voting will open in the morning of Sunday, August 13 and results will be posted in the morning of Thursday, August 17 (CST time).

How it works:
- When the voting opens, follow the link to the mini-poll that will be added at the end of this post
- You have a total of 8 votes this poll to spread across your favorite and least favorite prompts (you can also use less than 8 votes)
- You can find examples of acceptable voting practices on the Introduction thread.
- The prompts with the more favorable votes (comparing top votes to bottom votes, and looking at the overall number of votes it received) will be added to the final list

We are asking people to include their Goodreads profile address when they vote. To find this, just go to your own profile and then copy the URL/web address. If for some reason you can't link to your Goodreads profile, please post your full Goodreads name with enough identifiable information that we'll be able to access your profile.

Possible Prompts:
1. A book related to Sailor Moon
2. A book related to Going for the Gold
3. A book featuring a person who works in one the jobs that Barbie has had
4. A book involving travel, of any sort, fiction or non-fiction
5. A book recommended by an independent bookseller
6. A book recommended for (from provided or found list) or related to your zodiac sign.
7. A book that is part of a series
8. A book that was the basis for an Academy Award (Oscar) winning movie

2. A book related to Going for the Gold
Gold = color on the cover
word in the title i.e. “The Golden Compass”, “The Goldfinch”, etc
Or author's name (William Golding, Arthur Golden, William Goldman, Lily Gold, etc.)
gold medal/award (a character striving to be the best, related to the Olympics, a character seeking the top prize in any competition or race, or an achievement such as a gold record or golden globe award)
money or jewelry (big business, a character with a gambling addiction, a bank robber or jewel heist, a "gold digger", treasure seekers/pirates, someone trying to steal a leprechaun's pot of gold or a dragon's treasure.)
metal seekers (an alchemist, a prospector/set during the gold rush)
The search for anything “golden” (golden ticket, Golden State killer, golden snitch, Golden Fleece, entrance into the Golden Dawn, etc)

3. A book featuring a person who works in one the jobs that Barbie has had
There's a Wikipedia entry with all her careers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbie%...
To name a few: actor, ballerina, chef, musician, teacher, animal rescuer, doctor, nurse, paramedic, vet, pilot, paratrooper, US president, firefighter, park ranger, astronaut, computer engineer, entomologist, robotics engineer, palaeontologist, basketball player, Olympic athlete, flight attendant, magician, spy, beekeeper

4. A book involving travel, of any sort, fiction or non-fiction
Could be a “grand tour”, a road trip, a cruise, a backpacking trip, time travel, space travel, business trip, pioneering (is that a word?), exploration, etc.

Any format - romance, historical fiction, travelogue, adventure, memoir, family saga, sci-fi, etc.

5. A book recommended by an independent bookseller
You could BIO this prompt by choosing an Indie owned by an author. Below is a list for U.S. & U.K. I ran out of time, but I’m happy to add to this list for Indie’s from other countries if you send them to me.

6. A book recommended for (from provided or found list) or related to your zodiac sign
See this comment for lists for each sign: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

8. A book that was the basis for an Academy Award (Oscar) winning movie
Doesn't have to be limited to Best Picture. There are several awards for acting, production, technical awards, etc.

Here is a Goodreads list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...

This wikipedia page has categories and winners. Scroll down to the bottom: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

10. A book with a great first line
https://www.buzzfeed.com/hannahloewen...
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...

11. A book related to "civil rights" or "human rights"
According to the US Institute of diplomacy and Human Rights:
Human rights and Civil Rights. Two key terms within the sphere of diplomacy and development which you have probably heard of, but what do they actually stand for and what are the differences between them?

A simple definition is that “human rights” are the rights you have simply for being a human being. Comparatively, “civil rights” are contextual, meaning you are entitled to specific civil rights through being a citizen of a particular country, nation, or state. Civil rights are proclaimed by the government for the citizens of that country, while human rights are derived from natural law and are universally protected and applied.

This could include nonfiction and also sci-fi and fantasy!

13. A book to fit a prompt from a past ATY challenge
The previous challenges 2016 to 2022 are here plus, of course 2023 will count too:
2022: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
2021: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

2018: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
2017: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

14. A book with a word in the title related to reading
e.g. The Book Thief, The Reading List, The Midnight Library, Beach Read

I am intrigued the small country prompt but wonder how hard it would be to fill.

Overall a fun list!

The smallest country in both size and population is Vatican City, so anything involving the Vatican could work. Many of the others are island nations, so you might find a book where someone goes there for a vacation?

Iceland is also a qualifying country. 😀

I think using it as a setting prompt works fine! Not only can “going for the gold” be a reference to any competition to be the best or win, but the Women’s World Cup trophy is clad in 23-karat yellow and white gold, Anything surrounding that competition would count in my opinion!

message 22: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 1027 comments Additional information for #11

For #11. A book related to "civil rights" or "human rights"

Goodreads Listopias:
CIVIL RIGHTS: https://www.goodreads.com/genres/civi...
Civil Rights refer to the class of rights that protect an individual's freedom from infringement by governments, social organizations and private individuals. They ensure one's ability to participate in the civil and political life of the society and state without discrimination or repression.

Civil rights include the ensuring of peoples' physical and mental integrity, life, and safety; protection from discrimination on grounds such as race, gender, national origin, color, age, political affiliation, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability; and individual rights such as privacy and the freedoms of thought, speech, religion, press, assembly, and movement

HUMAN RIGHTS: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3...
A collection of novels, testimonials, diaries, poetry, and other types of literature related to human rights (and abuses) around the world.
ESSENTIAL NON-FICTION READING RE: HUMAN RIGHTS:
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/6...
Essential non-fiction reading that expands one´s understanding of human rights and social justice.
MY COUNTRY, THE ENEMY: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3...
A list about books that opened our eyes to our own countries' darker sides -- whether seen through the eyes of victims, through the lens of a novelist, or by way of historical analysis. This isn't about pointing fingers or pseudo-exoneration "they did it, too" style; nor is it about weighing the magnitude of the evil deeds of one country's government(s) against the magnitude of those of another government. It's a list about books that initiated or contributed to a thought process about our respective nations -- and about the question how we deal with our nations' historic legacy in our own lives.

Please note: However much you may be tempted to vote on or add books dealing with countries other than your own, please keep your votes and contributions close to home. The purpose of this list is not to show off how well-read or politically/historically aware you are in a global sense.

WAR HAS NO WINNERS: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
Genocide, war rape, torture, betrayal, bombing, famine, misery, alienation, trauma, PTSD, being a puppet for the interests of big business.
Is it true, like Plato said, that only the dead see the end of war?
That is not the place for acts of heroism. There are other lists for that. This is a list for the reports, memoirs and fiction works that show how the dark side of mankind can really surface in wartime.

BEST BOOKS FOR FREEDOM LOVERS: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3...
Books on what true freedom is and how to preserve and perpetuate it.

Additional Listopias that may not be quite as centered on just “civil rights” or “human rights”?
SOCIAL JUSTICE: BOOKS ON RACISM, SEXISM, AND CLASS: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/8...
Books that take on patriarchy, white supremacy, and capitalism, and other social justice issues. Fiction or non-fiction.
JUNE BOOK DISPLAY – JUNETEENTH / FREEDOM DAY:
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
"Every year, we must remind successive generations that this event triggered a series of events that one by one defines the challenges and responsibilities of successive generations. That's why we need this holiday." - Al Edwards, Texas Representative.

The following books center on emancipation, enslavement, civil rights, reparations, experiences of those who were enslaved, and more.

The literature found here includes OwnVoices fictional material (historic fiction, scifi, and more), and nonfiction.

The goal is to show the meaning of the day and freedom, to learn about experiences of those who were enslaved or who enslaved others, and views how freedom has been enables or hindered since Juneteenth.

message 37: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3268 comments First Impressions:

1. A book related to Sailor Moon - Probably not an upvote, but most likely not a downvote either. I'm not particularly attached to Sailor Moon anyway, and I found the list of suggested interpretations kind of turned it into a freebie since there were so many very different approaches

2. A book related to Going for the Gold - Still love this, will vote for it again

3. A book featuring a person who works in one the jobs that Barbie has had - I love the creativity of this one, but I'm a bit worried that it's too much of a freebie given the sheer number of jobs she's had

4. A book involving travel, of any sort, fiction or non-fiction - Most likely a downvote for me. Prompt fatigue, and I was never that interested in reading about travel to begin with.

5. A book recommended by an independent bookseller - No strong feelings either way

6. A book recommended for (from provided or found list) or related to your zodiac sign. - Prompt fatigue. I've seen some variation of zodiac sign (and/or Chinese zodiac) basically every year.

7. A book that is part of a series - It's been done many times before, but I have so many series that I want to get through that it at least would be helpful to me. I might vote for it.

8. A book that was the basis for an Academy Award (Oscar) winning movie - I like the new spin on the typical movie adaptation prompt, but unfortunately the list just doesn't appeal to me. I've already read the ones I'd be interested in trying.

9. A book that takes place in one of the world's 100 smallest countries - Geographic prompts are pretty much an automatic no for me at this point.

10. A book with a great first line - Maybe, depending on options. I'm a planner, and this is hard to know in advance.

11. A book related to "civil rights" or "human rights" - I like this

12. A book about or related to technology - Love this one! I love books that involve technology or social media, and vote for it every time

13. A book to fit a prompt from a past ATY challenge - Maybe, but I feel like I'd feel compelled to make it a multiweek if it gets in and pick a favourite from each past challenge

14. A book with a word in the title related to reading - Love this, most likely an upvote

15. A science or science fiction book - A very strong maybe.

So far my favorite is the books adapted into Oscar winners. I already found 5 I want to read on the listopia, and that’s not counting the movies made in the 10 years since the listopia was created. The Wikipedia links must have been truncated. Does anyone have a better link?

I like the travel prompt, technology, gold and science or science fiction.

Is Sailor Moon a toy, book, movie, or something else? Sorry, I’m not familiar with it.

I’m not into Barbie but I might be swayed by a good list of books that fit.

Sailor Moon began as a manga (Japanese comic book) in 1991. A year or so later, it was adapted into a very successful anime (Japanese cartoon). To date, it is one of the best selling manga series of all time.
Some of the themes or aspects of the series are reflected in the interpretations that follow the prompt on the Poll 8 suggestions and Poll 8 voting threads.
Hope that helps. 😀

Bec | 1337 comments My initial thoughts without having read anything:

1. A book related to Sailor Moon - no idea what this means
2. A book related to Going for the Gold - we just had this last week so not interested. Didn't vote for it then so adding it in the very next week isn't going to make me vote for it
3. A book featuring a person who works in one the jobs that Barbie has had - maybe - I think Barbie had many many different jobs so this would probably be pretty easy
4. A book involving travel, of any sort, fiction or non-fiction - yep, would like this one. Want to read The Karma Map
5. A book recommended by an independent bookseller - nope. If it was published by I would be more interested, but not recommended by. No idea even where to start with this.
6. A book recommended for (from provided or found list) or related to your zodiac sign. - seems far too wide with recommended for or related to.
7. A book that is part of a series - yep love this
8. A book that was the basis for an Academy Award (Oscar) winning movie - would have to look up all the academy awards and related books - but like this at first glance
9. A book that takes place in one of the world's 100 smallest countries - how are we defining smallest countries? size, population? I woud prefer a list of countries
10. A book with a great first line - nope - would have to read all the first lines to find a good one. Too hard to find I think.
11. A book related to "civil rights" or "human rights" - Not against, but will need to read the suggestions
12. A book about or related to technology - I think I like this one
13. A book to fit a prompt from a past ATY challenge - seems far too wide for me. we already have suggestion that didn't make it from this list, so I think that'e enough of pick your own prompt ones
14. A book with a word in the title related to reading - I like books related to reading so this is a yes from me
15. A science or science fiction book - I like science fiction - seems like it's related to technology

Sailor moon is a manga and anime about girls who guard the earth from very nasty entities. They have planets attached to their powers. There’s a whole story of their past lives and their future lives.

Usagi Tsukino is a cheerful 14-year-old schoolgirl who often finds herself in unwanted trouble. One day, she saves a talking cat named Luna from some mean kids, and her life is changed forever. Luna gives Usagi a magic brooch that transforms her into Sailor Moon, guardian of love and justice! Now Usagi must work with Luna to find the other Sailor Guardians and the Moon Princess, whose Legendary Silver Crystal is Earth's only hope against the dark forces of the evil Queen Beryl!

I think the "your" narrows down the choices. Noone knows that you don't do your own, you can pick anyone else's. But if it's "a" zodiac sign, it becomes a "read any book." Which I suppose picking someone else's sign would be but if you picked the person and their sign and then picked a book....

This wikipedia list is updated to 2023. If you scroll down to the bottom, you can pick by year up tp 2022. You can also pick categories like Costume Design, Original Score, Documentary, and Foreign Film

Kristina | 37 comments Oh, it's all upvotes for me! Love, love, love the Academy Award winner prompt - that's such a fun cross-media idea and it's always a kick to read the book and then go watch the movie. Plus there are some really great (and honestly unexpected!) movies that are based on books.

I'm a big fan of the independent bookseller one - it's very easy to go to an indie book website to find recs as well as into your local store. Curious if sites like bookshop.org (which is kind of a catch-all seller for independent bookstores) would count, as they usually have excellent tailored recommendation lists.

The Barbie & Going for the Gold ones are fun and flexible enough to include a lot of different book options. Also a big fan of the great first line, civil/human rights, reading-related title, and Sailor Moon prompts. I think my difficulty this time around will be narrowing it down to ones I don't want to vote for.

I think I'm kind of indifferent to the travel and science/SF options for the same reason - they feel a little too broad. Same with the series prompt. The technology one hits a better spot for me than science/science fiction, as it provides a narrower category to work in, which I prefer for prompted reading. But none of them are anything I'd downvote, just not really what I'm looking for.

Have you seen/read No Country for Old Men?
Read the book after seeing the movie a couple times, and now it makes sense. Fabulous book!

Alicia | 1490 comments Robin, I think that list is just all the winners in general. Not winners based off of a book.

At least I’m fairly certain Titanic is based off of the actual event 😉

What has surprised me the most is how many "classic" movies didn't win any of the "Major" awards. Like Doctor Zhivago and Giant. I've been working on adding some of the less popular award winners to the list, so check back often.

Also, if you search for a movie on Wikipedia or IMBD, you can see what awards it has won. So if you are unsure, try that route.
