Rachel (whitepicketfence) | 100 comments There is a lot of hype about this book in my area, since the author is local. Can anyone tell me if it is clean: language, sex, graphic violence, themes etc.?

Thanks!

Rachel (whitepicketfence) | 100 comments I never got any feedback here, so I forged ahead on my own, and to answer my own question, this is definitely NOT clean, just in case any one else is wondering. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 5: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 7 comments I too saw your question and decided to give it a try. Today, after reading 84 pages, had to put it down ... profanity that is unacceptable to me.

Michele | 22 comments It does start out well and beautiful, but just seems to disintegrate as it moves forward.

I Have Read 15 Books of The Shannara Series and They are All Clean. No Swearing. No Smut/Nudity. It Might Get a Little Violent

The Flipped Page (Susan K) (theflippedpage) | 48 comments There is violence and profanity, also sex, although not explicit. Just fyi. I did read it, but it isn't what I usually read.

The Flipped Page (Susan K) (theflippedpage) | 48 comments This was my review here:
I had mixed feelings about this. I really was rooting for a different ending, but in one sense that is how history works. The reality is there are some very different endings other than HEA in the typical sense. Reading the story from several different perspectives made it interesting and kept you hoping and wondering for the hope that comes from youth, even in the face of danger and hardship.
I enjoyed reading and experiencing the different perspectives of the hardships, struggles, and fears of the two main characters, Marie-L., and Werner. Very beautifully crafted and told. From the horrors of the soldiers and youth, to the horrors of those who were occupied and living in war-torn countries. Bits of humanity seep throughout the book. The 'realness' and humanity of the characters as they struggled with what was presented to them as duty, country, and their experience as they tried to escape and work for a betterment of their lives the only or best way they could within the confines of their country and circumstances.

The Flipped Page (Susan K) (theflippedpage) | 48 comments I will say, I usually reference profanity and other elements that I don't want to read, but didn't. So will have to change that in my review!

message 19: by B (new)

B (deathandchocolate) | 37 comments Can't believe it's taken this long to ask, but what can anyone tell me about Jodi Piccoult novels? I'm considering 19 Minutes in particular, but I'd love to know more about her writing in general and how clean it is.

message 20: by B (new)

B (deathandchocolate) | 37 comments (Sorry - the correct spelling is Picoult, but I'm on my phone and it doesn't give me the regular option to edit my comment.)

Carolyn | 13 comments Don't know about other Jodi Picoult books, but I have been told that "My Sister's Keeper" is NOT clean.

Marlo | 19 comments Generally, they have frequent swearing -- some more than others. She likes the "f" word quite a bit. Most also have a few sexual references. She's one I can only read in small doses. I actually just finished Plain Truth, probably one of her milder books.

C. | 297 comments Good to know, I was also wondering about Picoult books, thanks Marlo.

What about books by Jodi Thomas?

Michele Brazie | 4 comments I volunteer in a large book department of our local thrift store. I am in charge of organizing the donations and have created Clean Reads and Cozy Mystery sections. My challenge is to learn from you what crime and romance writers fall into either of those categories. Can you give me a quick list? I am into serious non-fiction most of the time and consequently find myself to be somewhat clueless in this regard. For example, Susan Mallory, Luanne Rice, Sheryl Wiggs, Nora Roberts, Koontz, Colban, Robin Cook, and Patterson are all prolific writers, but I have no idea about their content. Please help.

message 25: by B.C. (new)

B.C. Crow | 15 comments Feel free to check out my books. I read several genres and review each giving them movie style ratings and i explain the content as best i can in as few words as us nessesary. There does seem to be a lot of garbage out there though

message 26: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 271 comments Michele, that sounds a great idea especially as you plan to check content before you shelve them.

B (deathandchocolate) | 37 comments I can't remember where I found this book, so I don't know anything about it, but does anyone know anything about "The Treachery of Beautiful Things" by Ruth Frances Long? It looks amazing, but I couldn't find anything about content online.

Edit: Nevermind, I found it on the group's bookshelf and a couple of people have rated it! Thank G-d for that bookshelf :)

(it seems pretty clean, in case anyone was curious)

Diane Rapp (dianerappauthor) | 95 comments All of Nora Roberts books are very steamy, Dean Koontz writes dark and bloody scenes, and James Patterson often includes a LOT of violence or gore. I'm not sure about the other authors you listed.

We have a group of Indie authors that help support each other. They all write clean books with no blushworthy scenes or graphic violence. Check out the website: http://cleanindiereads.com to see a lot of authors.

My pages on the site are: http://cleanindiereads.com/high-seas/ and http://cleanindiereads.com/heirs-to-t...

Thank you, that is very useful to know - I've just read your review. And you're right, the title is alluring - the very word.

I tried a few of Nora Roberts, and never could even get past the profanity! Yep on Dean Koontz being too dark for me, hadn't tried Patterson, and don't want to now, thanks!

Michele Brazie | 4 comments Can anyone offer read back on Robert Jordan's books?

message 36: by EJ (new) - rated it 3 stars

EJ Johnson | 39 comments Michele Brazie Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series is very good. It is extremely complex with many villians, heros, and other characters. I cannot classify it as 100% clean. There's instances of sexual immorality, foul language, though not modern, and inappropriately clad people. There are no explicit sex scenes, that I can remember. There is violence because it's about a war. I found some books to be difficult to get through because of how evil the specific villian for that book was. I did not stop reading any of the books and completed the entire series. I think Robert Jordan, and then Brandon Sanderson who finished after him, are talented writers but I can't recommend them as completely clean. However I don't think their works are pandering which I think is a problem with many modern authors.

Marinda Smith | 2 comments Hello, does anyone know if Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi is clean?

Also, how about When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi?

And finally, Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein?

Thank you!

Marlene | 19 comments I've heard good things about When Breath becomes Air and Code Name Verity, but haven't actually read them. So I'm curious too.

Good info, thanks for sharing.

Erica Personally, I had to put down Code Name Verity; too much language in the first few pages so I quit early on. Can't vouch for the rest of the book.

Recently finished When Breath Becomes Air - it was clean with the exception of some language when he's quoting a patient {used 1-3 F bombs}. I don't recall anything else about it that was an issue.

I'm pretty particular in what swears I'll tolerate; I'm pretty much ok with words you'd find in the Bible. Other than that, I'm quick to quit reading. Hope that helps!

Marlene | 19 comments Thanks Erica.

Amy LaRaviere | 19 comments Does anyone know if A Walk To Remember by Nicholas Sparks is clean?

message 46: by Melody (new)

Melody (melodyssong) | 1 comments Amy LaRaviere - A Walk To Remember is very clean. If you think it's going to be like the movie, it's not. The book takes place in the 50s, and if there's anything that's not squeaky clean, there might be a couple swear words thrown in, but as far as I remember, there's nothing else. Just a sweet, clean story.
