Joanna (walker) | 2288 comments Deedee, me too!

I've been working on two subchallenges, but may not quite finish either one. I've read 6 (plus two in progress) for one and 7 (plus one in progress) for the other. Not a very efficient way to go about it...

Apple | 951 comments I had planned another Celebration of Styles, but am playing with my choices

I wanted to do some sci fi, so had thought of doing Growing Genres, but I am going to try to get it into a Pick n Mix plan instead so I am not as constrained by dates.

Am also loving going through all the old 20pt tasks, so might do another Favourites.

I think I just did a few too many heavy books at once - Nth Korea, STH Korea, Cambodia and Russia - and I need a more unrealistic head space for a bit….

I'd just like to note the name of this subchallenge was

Sub-Challenge Summer - Favorites

😂 😉

Apple | 951 comments Hmmm… I am going to defend myself by saying both my parents are English 😝🤣

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments LOL

Differences in spelling can be both interesting and jarring. 🤭

Oh, well done, Nick. I'm glad you had fun with this!

Valerie, this does not work for a 4 word title. The title of the book is Bolt.

Ha, ha.... Thanks for keeping me on the straight and narrow, Elizabeth! I did know the actual title is 'Bolt', I just read the task incorrectly - I thought I had to be 4 letters!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments LOL - well glad I could help. 😂

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments What authors are you thinking of for the Fall Birthdays poll?

Well, I voted for Elmore Leonard and I was thinking I would read one of his books! ;)

Now that Mark Twain is in the lead I'm not sure. I'll have to think on it.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments I voted for Stephen King without looking, but because his letters have the most variety. I may have to rethink.

message 514: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5272 comments I went with Stephen King because I like to read horror in the fall so I might read one of his books.

Apple | 951 comments Oh wow, they are all tied! I wonder if all 3 have tied before?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments Goodness! I don't think we've ever had a 3-way tie before.

Deedee | 2279 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Goodness! I don't think we've ever had a 3-way tie before."

I haven't voted yet but I decline to be the deciding vote amongst the three :)

Or, maybe, y'all should lobby me! LOFL! (don't, just kidding)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments Deedee, go ahead and vote your wishes. In the past, Kate or I might have changed our vote to avoid a tie and the extra time consumed for a re-vote.

I honestly don't have a real preference in this one and could easily just not vote for any of them.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments Valerie - please note that 20.1 is under 1001 ratings, not reviews. I think your Ellis Peters title won't work.

Once again, thank you for keeping me on the straight and narrow! I really need someone to keep watch on me! ha, ha.... I really wanted to listen to that too!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments Maybe there will be another place for it. It seems most seasons lots and lots of things will work. And there is the female style you’ll want to watch out for, too.

I hope so. I had it penciled in for this season, but will not get to it.

I think I need someone, too. Somehow I couldn't read "ends in Q, X, or Z" meant the name/title couldn't start with the Uncommon letter. 😒

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments My daughter shared a post with me ...

Contronyms

This is a new word for me. Contronyms are words that have opposite or nearly opposite meanings depending on context. Examples:

Cleave - split apart/cling tightly
Sanction - to allow/to penalize
Dust - to add particles/to remove them
Weather - wear away/endure
Resign - to quit/to commit to
Fast - moving quickly/firmly secured
Oversight - a careless error/supervision
Screen - to show (a film)/to obscure

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Hi everyone.. I'm quasi-back. Been going through chemo treatments since May. Had my last on August 20. Had some very rough days... but expect to be on the road to recovery soon. It may seem trivial... but the worse part has been my tastebuds going kaput even though my appetite never wavered.
Anyway.... I did find some time to read as you can see from my posts today.
Hope you are all well....and look forward to the next season.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments Do you have a favorite SSB square?

I do. N1 - Neustadt winners/finalists.

I think we had a task for this years ago - or maybe it was on one of the Prizes subchallenges. In any case, I was very glad to see this option.

That is a good square because there are such a variety of interesting choices.

I like B1 (Author has an equal number of letters in their first name and last name (middle names are ignored)), and I1 (Title and subtitle do not contain the word The). Both for the same reason - they made me think about names (of author or book) in a different way.

This is what I’ve always said about RwS, that it has made me look at and for books in an entirely different way.

EDIT: We’re doing the same row it looks like.

Apple | 951 comments Due to distraction yesterday, I left my tablet at home so could not finish the book I was reading. This gave me the opportunity to review my bedroom bookshelves, and I finally found the "No "E" in title or authors name" task. Had been driving me crazy!

Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

I don't have this one on my list, but was looking at Hardy for 20.5.

No, it has "the", which is where i kept coming unstuck. I have Scission by Tim Winton, and it's about time I got this off my shelf, it's been sitting there awhile!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments Yep, I'm starting to miss such things, which is one of the many reasons I decided I had to give up being a mod.

Tim Winton is wonderful. I hope you enjoy that!

I have read a LOT of Tim over the last .... 35 years. OMG, that is a LONG time, lol

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14229 comments He's from your country. I found him late in life. 😉

(Although 35 years isn't all that long. Both of my grandchildren are older than that.)
