THOUGHTS AND IDEAS FROM THE SUGGESTIONS THREAD
1. A book whose title is a prepositional phrase
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3...
This Goodreads Listopia is full of ideas for this prompt and is blissfully free of books that don’t really relate to the prompt.
https://www.listchallenges.com/print-...
A prepositional phrase is a group of words consisting of a preposition, its object, and any words that modify the object. Most of the time, a prepositional phrase modifies a verb or a noun.
Examples:
About A Boy
In The Time of Butterflies
Beneath a Scarlett Sky
Into The wild
Like Water For Chocolate
Of Human Bondage
Under the Volcano
When Breath Becomes Air
Example of a book whose title is a prepositional phrase: Into the Wild or Under the Volcano In these examples, the prepositional phrase is the title in its entirety.
Example of a book with a preposition merely in the title: ""Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History"". ""In"" is a preposition in the title, but the title itself is not a prepositional phrase.
2. A book with a fictional famous character
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - actress
Big Summer - influencer
Beach Read - authors
Daisy Jones & The Six - band
Carrie Soto Is Back - tennis player
American Royals - royalty
Malibu Rising - supermodel, photographer, surfers, singer
The Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Percy Jackson series would all work here too.
4. A book related to the theme of a Las Vegas hotel
Here's a few:
Luxor - Egyptian theme, pyramids
Flamingo - Florida, tropical, birds
Excalibur - Medieval theme, castles, jousting
New York, New York - Anything New York
Venetian - Venice, Italy, Italian theme
Treasure Island - Pirates, Caribbean
Circus Circus - Circus Theme
Caesar's Palace - Roman theme
MGM Grand or Planet Hollywood - Art Deco, Hollywood
This Wikipedia link gives the ""theme"" of each of the hotels on the Las Vegas strip. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...
5. A book with a character that could be described as one of the classes in Dungeons and Dragons
Classes are barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, rogue, wizard, warlock, sorcerer, paladin, monk, fighter, and artificer
See this comment for listopias: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
6. A book from the Are You Well Read in World Literature list
https://www.listchallenges.com/are-yo...
7. A book that features a child character
This would include many middle grade and young adult novels. There are also many novels written for adults that feature a child character.
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
8. A book for leap day/year
Leap days skip the calendar forward by one day. A year is 365 days, but the earth takes an extra .2422 of a day to make it all the way around the sun. This extra time has been dealt with by various calendars in various ways. The Julian calendar held February 24th twice every four years (since February was the shortest month in the Roman calendar) and then just didn't count the second one, so leap years legally still had 365 days. But that overcorrected the calendar and the months began to drift in relation to the seasons. In 1582, the Catholic Church decided to correct this because the spring equinox is important to the timing of Easter, so they changed the calculation (leap days no longer occur in years divisible by 100 unless they're also divisible by 400) to take 3 leap days out of the calendar, advanced the calendar date ten days to correct the drift, and moved the leap day to February 29th, giving it its own recognized date for the first time. Whew!
After all that, February 29, 2024 seems too good to pass up for a reading prompt. Here are some ways you could fill this one:
* A book published or set in a leap year
* A book by an author born in a leap year
* A book with missing, extra, skipped, or repeated time, time travel, or calendrical shenanigans
* A book involving or set in February
* A book with a leap (in the title, on the cover, or in the text or plot)
10. A book involving a wild animal or endangered species, in the content, title, or on the cover
I'm defining wild as any animal but a family pet.
Animals on other planets could qualify
11. A book connected to color by topic, title, or author name

Books about colors: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
Authors with a color in their name: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
12. A book with a cover design that reminds you of one of the four seasons
13. A book with a botanical cover
This would include covers with a stylised botanical motif as well as covers (prominently) featuring plants or flowers.

Literary fiction is not as serious as it used to be, imo. It contains a lot of general fiction, contemporary, well-written novels, women's lit, and it now contains genre books that people have found especially well written. You'll find some chick-lit, romance, fantasy and sci-fi novels with this tag too.

This is a fun prompt. I'll go for Planet Hollywood. I took a film class and got hooked on Hollywood history. I have more than I can use for "books with fewer than 2024 ratings"

How about suggestions for Wild and Endangered Animals?"
I think you could twist Mad, Bad, Dangerous a few different ways, but my first thought was books where a villain or anti-hero is the protagonist. There's a few different lists like Villain Protagonist or The Best Anti-heroes / The Best Anti-heroes in Books.
Mad covers a wide definition, but a fun list I found is The Female Malaise: She's Sad, Mad, and Bad. A lot of gothic fiction or gothic horror would feed right into this prompt too - traditional books like The Turn of the Screw or The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories or more modern books like Mexican Gothic have elements of madness and badness (and danger!).
For wild/endangered species, you can find a list of currently endangered species here: https://www.worldwildlife.org/species...
There's also a few lists with nonfiction books specifically about endangered/extinct species - Before It's Too Late: Endangered Species seems pretty comprehensive and they have links to other lists featuring vulnerable and extinct species in their list description.
And for wild animals on covers, there's a decent amount of animal themed lists to be found, including:
1. Ravens/Crows
2. Elephants
3. Foxes
4. Bats (this one includes titles/subject matter, but has covers on the list, too!)
5. Tigers (also includes titles)

Go dragons! Vote for dragons!"
I’m with you. DRAGONS!!!

~~New York, New York has a huge rollercoaster

1. A book whose title is a prepositional phrase - Neutral so far, but I could be persuaded if I had enough options on my list that fit easily.
2. A book with a fictional famous character - Only mildly interested. I'm not that interested in books that deal with fame, but I also have some favourites that do.
3. A book with a main character who is Mad, Bad or Dangerous - I like this one a lot, and would consider making it a multi-week if I had enough ways to differentiate the 3 options.
4. A book related to the theme of a Las Vegas hotel - A very strong maybe. I'm starting to feel like these kinds of prompts end up being a kind of catch-all "choose your own prompt" idea since there are so many options, but I like the creativity of this one specifically.
5. A book with a character that could be described as one of the classes in Dungeons and Dragons - Another very strong maybe. Leaning more toward yes, but it would either be an upvote or neutral, definitely not down.
6. A book from the Are You Well Read in World Literature list - Strong downvote! I just went through the whole list and I saw very little that I'm interested in reading. I'd much rather pull from books that are already on my TBR
7. A book that features a child character - I always find this one harder to fulfill than I expect, but I like it.
8. A book for leap day/year - My literal brain has trouble figuring out how to interpret this one, unless the book itself has something to do with leap years. I'd probably default to a book published in a leap year, and publishing year prompts are not so appealing to me.
9. A book that has been on your TBR for over a year - This would definitely help me go through some of the books that have been on my list for ages, so I'd be for it.
10. A book involving a wild animal or endangered species, in the content, title, or on the cover - I'd have to look at my options, but as of now, I'm not that interested.
11. A book connected to color by topic, title, or author name - I think I'd rather have just one of the three options since it seems like 3 different prompts to me.
12. A book with a cover design that reminds you of one of the four seasons - Not opposed, but don't strongly want it either.
13. A book with a botanical cover - I don't know why, but I like this a lot. Maybe because I have a few books in mind that would easily fit.
14. A book shelved as literary fiction - Would need to look at my options, but I'm not opposed.
15. A book with dragons - I'm a little prompt fatigued with dragons because I feel like they have been brought up every year in some format

This is a fun prompt. I'll go for Planet Hollywood. I took a film class and got hooked on Hollywood history."
Two series you might enjoy:

Both series include real figures from classic Hollywood

That is my fault. I'll find the correct one and let the Mods know.

Thanks I'm game to do it again. I like our listopia more than the other website. There are a ton of books I still want to read.

I might have some on my environmental lists, but in the meantime, here were a few favorites:
Happiness by Aminatta Forna
Migrations
People of the Whale by Linda Hogan
The Eye Of The Elephant: An Epic Adventure in the African Wilderness by Delia Owens (Where the Crawdads...)
Julie of the Wolves
Once There Were Wolves
The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History
Also
West with Giraffes

I really like your endangered animals listopias.

Kristina, these are great. Thanks for sharing!
The list about women and malaise made me want to laugh and cry. There is a whole spate of non-fiction books out now about mysterious female ailments. I'll have to look at the ones about bad women.
I knew I had elephant books on my TBR, but I had no idea I had so many books with foxes on the cover. I highly recommend Happiness by Aminatta Forna.
I got over my fear of bats (sort of) by watching them swoop around after bugs in my back yard. I might actually decide to read about them.
Wow, I had to buckle down and work all afternoon and look at the awesome suggestions! There's 3 I'm a HUGE yes on- maybe the rewording of my beloved fiction book with an IRL character to any sort of famous person means it will finally get voted in. And there's 3 heck nos... And the others? Well, it's late and I'm still up so I might be cranky. But I'm also submitting a major grant and I might be happy.
And while I'm not an animal fan, my book group just voted for some book with giraffes in the title, so I'll vote for that prompt so that book has a home. (eta- in reviewing the previous posts- it's West with Giraffes)

They're excited and even I voted for it- it looks interesting. This year we picked so many stinkers, so maybe it's out of our systems? I normally try to make all my nominations based on the categories we've picked here so far and 2 of those made it in, so I have at least 2 weeks spoken for!

Last week my group had a really tough old nonfiction book that depressed the heck out of me. We have a couple coming up that are on a lot of our listopias, so I think my groups will line up ok. I think we might regret picking Yellowface, but we'll see.

1. A book whose title is a prepositional phrase - still don't really understand it but I'm not against it
2. A book with a fictional famous character - I like this as I have Malibu Rising on my TBR
3. A book with a main character who is Mad, Bad or Dangerous - neutral on this one. Could make it work.
4. A book related to the theme of a Las Vegas hotel - don't really like this one as I have no affiliation to Las Vegas. Not against it but not for it either.
5. A book with a character that could be described as one of the classes in Dungeons and Dragons - no interest in dungeons and dragons - I've heard of it obviously but no idea what it entails. May downvote but haven't decided.
6. A book from the Are You Well Read in World Literature list - probably no for me - everything on the list that I'm interested in I've read already. I would push myself to read something if I had to.
7. A book that features a child character - I'm sure I could make this work
8. A book for leap day/year - don't love this based on the name but because time travel was mentioned as an option I really like that.
9. A book that has been on your TBR for over a year - yep I really like this one. I keep adding more books to my TBR and read the newer ones rather than the older ones.
10. A book involving a wild animal or endangered species, in the content, title, or on the cover - neutral about this one.
11. A book connected to color by topic, title, or author name - I feel lilke we don't need by topic, title or author, just connected to would have the same impact. I like this though. will vote for it.
12. A book with a cover design that reminds you of one of the four seasons- no thoughts on this one yet - will need to check my TBR
13. A book with a botanical cover - as for 12.
14. A book shelved as literary fiction - yep i'll vote for this one
15. A book with dragons- I'll vote for this one too - I have plenty of books with dragons in my audible account

1. A book whose title is a prepositional phrase
I like it! A quick TBR survey found me already seven books that would fit, and as a linguist by profession, I'm always happy about language-related prompts.
2. A book with a fictional famous character
This is a plot element I always enjoy, and I should have no trouble finding something that fits.
3. A book with a main character who is Mad, Bad or Dangerous
No immediate idea springs to mind, but I like the general idea and would enjoy finding something if it got in.
4. A book related to the theme of a Las Vegas hotel
This could be fun!
5. A book with a character that could be described as one of the classes in Dungeons and Dragons
I'm loving it! Definitely voting for that one.
6. A book from the Are You Well Read in World Literature list
I'm not a fan of list prompts, and this list in particular keeps popping up in various challenges, so ... probably a downvote for me.
7. A book that features a child character
A lot of Stephen King books would work here, and I have been wanting to re-read some, so that would be a definite option for me.
8. A book for leap day/year
I would have to think about that, but I like the idea.
9. A book that has been on your TBR for over a year
I have 300+ unread books on my Kindle, so ... this one is pretty much a "read a book" prompt for me :D
10. A book involving a wild animal or endangered species, in the content, title, or on the cover
Nothing immediately jumps out at me here.
11. A book connected to color by topic, title, or author name
Nice and doable but been there, done that.
12. A book with a cover design that reminds you of one of the four seasons
This is a nice open way to get in a seasons prompt.
13. A book with a botanical cover
I'm currently listening to The Impossible Girl, which would fit, I guess ... not sure if I have anything that matches for next year.
14. A book shelved as literary fiction
Check.
15. A book with dragons
I have nothing on my TBR right now, but I will read Fourth Wing at some point, I guess, so .... :D

And I still haven’t read the top two books that I listed for the prompt two years ago. Ha. I love list prompts but I am not a fan of world lit.

I was waiting for the ‘oh my!’ At the end of lions and tigers and bears! 😂🤣

Once again expanding on the dungeons and dragons prompt:
Barbarian: warrior, soldier, military novels
Bard: songwriters, musicians, singers, bands, travelers
Cleric: healer, nurse, doctor, midwife, EMT, therapist
Druid: nature-lover, shape-shifter, ecologist, biologist
Rogue: thieves, con-men, spies
Wizard: academics, professors, students
Warlock: books with pacts, paranormal, vampires, undead
Sorcerer: classic witchy people, rich people, royalty
Paladin: crusaders, detectives, police officials, judges
Monk: religious leaders, clergy people
Fighter: athletes, bodyguards, protectors
Artificer: inventors, engineers, techies

Thank you for making this list. I was working on something similar but I prefer the way you did it. Hopefully this helps people see that this prompt can apply to any genre and not just fantasy (as one might assume by the D&D reference).

Yes and I found so many interesting books on the list that time!!! I still haven't read a lot of them, so this is a definite YES vote from me.

How it works:
- When the voting opens, follow the link to the mini-poll that will be added at the end of this post
- You have a total of 8 votes this poll to spread across your favorite and least favorite prompts (you can also use less than 8 votes)
- You can find examples of acceptable voting practices on the Introduction thread.
