Welcome to the The Lightning Thief Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on September 1st and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each day we will be reading by chapters or page numbers. Page numbers are an approximation based on the hardcover or paperback that is the default on Goodreads. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

This is my first time doing a buddy read and I am quite excited!

It will also be a reread for me, I’ve read this book years ago but never actually continued the series. Hence, I thought it’d be a good opportunity to do so now.

I read this forever ago in middle school and never finished the series. I can't wait to reread this one and get into the others. If you both want to br the whole series, I'm down!

Chapters 1-5
(view spoiler)[ This is definitely a trip down memory lane! I forgot how much of a troubled kid Percy was and just how much misfortune followed him around everywhere. I feel bad for how much these MCs go through when they’re barely discovering their powers. Poor Percy was scared, sad, and angry the majority of these chapters. When he fought the Minotaur, all I could visualize was the exact scene from the movie lol. (hide spoiler)]

Same here!! I've read this 7-8 years ago and it feels great being back in Percy's world! I can visualize many scenes quite well because of the movie too!! I forgot how much humorous Riordan's writing style was.

I'm gonna post my annotations from the past two days soon. I haven't read today's chapters yet.

Chapters 1-5
(view spoiler)[The first paragraph already has me hooked! I love how Percy already seems like a real person I could relate to.

I haaaate that Percy has such a hard time all the time. I hate that he's only twelve and refers to his life as miserable and short. No one should have such disappointing life experiences that make them view their life like that, especially a kid. And he's such a loyal friend! Probation or not, he's taking up for Grover!

I could never ditch Grover after he talked about protecting me. There were too many weird things going on for me to go through it alone.

Chapters 6-10
(view spoiler)[Percy just has the worst luck. Why is he a target to all the bullies?
Gabe honestly is the worst.

It’s been like 15 years since I’ve read this book, and I really don’t remember any of this, except that I thought Annabeth was badass.

These chapters read how I think: really fast and full of energy.

(view spoiler)[It's probably because he's a goat, but Grover reminds me of Mr. Tumnus, and he's probably my favorite character so far. I can't wait to find out more about his journey.

Chapters 15-18
(view spoiler)[I didn't realize that Percy was so close to Luke, but I'm glad he has someone older to confide in about things.

Ares is...something.

Grover is better at his job than The Council thinks. He does everything he can for the half-bloods. Luke and Annabeth might not have been his assignments, but he protected them and Thalia the best he could. Thalia made the decision to sacrifice herself, so I don't see how he failed.

I would give anything for an opportunity to have a free stay at a luxury hotel with free food and entertainment.

Oh, never mind. I should've realized it was a trap. I don't know why I thought it was a god helping them out when the gods have been doing the opposite.

What is WRONG with Gabe? How do you blame a kid for all of your issues? He's literally a kid!

@Brianna, I agree with you. Gabe really is….something. No wonder Percy hates him so much.

(view spoiler)[ I felt bad for him when his mom was gone. Now, that we know she didn’t die, I have some hope for him. I keep trying to remember what happens but I can’t get the movie out of my head, so book Percy’s life happenings keep surprising me. Like the Fates and the yarn? The Echidna and the Nereid? Didn’t see them coming. (hide spoiler)]

Anyway, still enjoying this book to the fullest. I would still sell my soul to experience this for the first time ever though hahaha

@Edith, I enjoyed it too! I didn't remember the book well since it's been so long, and I don't really remember the movie either. I can't wait to finish the series and watch the movies, even if they never finished them 🙄 I also can't wait for the new series! I didn't really fall into the series when everyone else did, so I'm late but I really get the hype!

Omg I know! I was upset when they decided not to move forward with them! Even better though for that Disney series like you said. OH! Riordan’s also releasing a brand new college Percy book! I’m sooo excited for it! I literally just preordered it!

Btw, how far into the series did you want to venture? Did you want to do just the PJO series, or the accompanying Heroes of Olympus series as well?

Is it Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods? And I'm okay with reading both series!

Yeah!! :D it’s coming out a day after my birthday, so happy birthday to me lol! And cool, that’s great to hear. I was OBSESSED with Heroes of Olympus for a bit. Aaahhh, so excited! You’ve unlocked the fangirl side in me haha.

I know it’s not until next month, but I’ll start working on splitting up the chapters for the rest of the series. I’d like to have a rough plan set out to make it easier on Mina.

I've been listening to this woman's audio on YT when I get too busy to read because I love her reading. Her channel is called Dare to Read if anyone is interested.
