Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Throw Iain under the book train, Felina! 🤣🤣🤣

I'd be down for that! I've never read Dark Tower, but I keep hearing great things about it.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments First few books are rough, but the gritty narrative voice becomes more solid.

Ah my love-distaste relationship with Dark Tower series. 🥸

I did a re-read by audio and it was good with predictable response from me. 👻👻👻

Hey now!

I didn’t like Gunnie Rose. What else didn’t I like?"

Maybe you just give alot of 2-3 star ratings... I mostly meant you weren't continuing with Gunnie Rose & Dune, and also rated Color of Magic 3 stars... you rated a Poirot 2 stars, but I assume that was a solo read (just checked your 2024 reads for answers)

I covered that in the Stephen King umbrella... I want to read Dark Tower someday, but want to read a bunch of other Stephen King first... I have a long way to go, and suck at making time for non-BRs these days...

Felina | 2416 comments Oh yeah, I feel bad about the Poirot book. I read it cause I wanted to watch the movie and the movie was nothing, and I mean NOTHING like the book and the whole thing pissed me off. It’s not the books fault at all but I was halfway through when I saw the movie and then my brain blew up and when I went back 3 months later to finish it, it was very begrudgingly.

Felina | 2416 comments Now, I’m hearing a lot of Stephen King talk here and I’m getting excited. Aside from his more recent stuff, I’m a big fan and would definitely be up for some methodical BR’s leading up to a DT read through. I’ve read a lot of King and I love him. Shall we make a comprehensive plan and maybe start next year? I say next year cause we have some chonks coming up with the Sanderson read in the fall. We could maybe start this summer with some of his shorter fair. Thoughts?

Indeed. The Gunslinger is rough but fortunately short. I struggled with the beginning of Drawing but then I was hooked.

If someone made a Stephen King BR plan, I'd be in... going solo hasn't worked very well... at all... even random one-off BRs like Pet Sematary, I never even started, for some reason... this was awhile ago now, and I was probably overbooked at the time...

I'd say focus on the important stuff for DT, mostly?... that covers like half of King's works, I think?... and I like being in-the-know for references...

message 110: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina | 2416 comments *Does a King dance* It’s getting very spooky in here!

I’ll try to put together a list if Nirkatze doesn’t do it first cause the woman is a machine.

I did a google search, and found an online recommended list of 14 books and short stories to read, while reading the 7-8 Dark Tower books, for maximum referential enjoyment... not sure if we should read some others as well, but that's a start... most of the stuff I've tried/aimed to read in the past by Stephen King, came from other lists that were recommending starting points to dip your toe in the water with King's works, rather than DT specifically, I think...

message 112: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina | 2416 comments I wonder if I’ve read the 14. I’ve read quite a lot of King but certainly not all.

Here's the list I read: https://www.slashfilm.com/905247/the-...

Also found this other list on Storygraph that's a fair bit longer and includes books that aren't technically connected, but fans think they are or there are conceptual connections... has a much different reading order, too: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading...

Whoever comes up with an official BR plan has their work cut out for them...

EDIT: Redditors also linked this list: https://geekunchained.wordpress.com/2...

And this list/blog, that has since gone offline has extended lists with 32 & 59 stories: https://web.archive.org/web/201706190...

A bunch of those 59 are probably short stories in anthologies...

This is gonna be an epic BR, if we set it up... the next question becomes pacing, because reading 20-60 books would take awhile, just doing one a month... but some of these are probably tomes, so it would probably have to be a more complicated endeavor, taking page counts into account, if you wanted to speed it up some...

message 114: by Felina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Felina | 2416 comments Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. The pacing would have to depend on book length. Most of the King books I have read have references so I feel like the 14 list you originally found was too short but 59 seems too long I’ll start drafting a proposal and post it in the buddy reads planning thread. .

I'm thinking maybe we should make a book club thread... not to do the Buddy Read in, I think this should be traditional threads... just to maintain the plan and keep hyped up maybe, until we can make the thread requests... I'm 100% sure Yanique doesn't want us officially planning 2025 Buddy Reads just yet, other than finishing up ongoing long-running 2024 series BRs...

And this is slowly overtaking the Dune thread right now, as we spitball...

Sometimes I/we make these plans a year ahead of time, and they get lost in the comments of other threads for months, before being made official, and people start to assume the plans have been dropped...

This definitely seems like a large BR, to replace Animorphs / Discworld next year...

EDIT: Made a thread to continue this discussion: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Felina | 2416 comments Okay. I’ll post my proposal in the book club thread.

Beena (beenz) | 2207 comments So I spent the last week attempting to read this, but like Tabea, I just wasn't clicking with it. I think it's something to do with the narration style as well. Chucked in the towel at 8% in, I didn't find anything wrong with it, it just wasn't for me.

Nirkatze | 21173 comments On the plus, side, Beena--if you want to see the rest of the story, part 2 of the movie is out in less than a month!

In the meantime, more time for other BRs. ^_^

message 121: by Beena (new) - added it

Beena (beenz) | 2207 comments Yeah I liked the film, it's a shame they had to do it in two parts, it was a bit weird just watching half a story, so I'm looking forward to the rest of it!

Nirkatze | 21173 comments I'm planning on doing a binge watch once they're both out in video... it'll be nice to curl up by the fireplace with popcorn and hot chocolate and watch the worms ride... Makes me wish I had a projector, to do full theater hugeness...
