In honour of Terry Pratchett, I am going to slowly re-read the Discworld novels.

1. The Colour of Magic 25/03/2015

I should read them for the first time; I think I'll start soon ...

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

ALL of them???

I'd love to join you, but I don't think I can commit to all 40+ of them

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

@Giorgia- Yes all of them. I think it may take me a few years but I really want to read them in publication order

@Laura- You are still welcome to join me for some of the books. I am only going to read one or two a month so I can continue to read other things. I'm starting with The Color of Magic today

What a fun challenge! Do you have a plan as to what order you are going to follow?

message 6: by Paulfozz (new)

Paulfozz | 1001 comments That's a great idea Heather - good luck.

message 7: by Mollie (new)

Mollie | 15 comments I like this! I am in but will be going slowly. I would like to print out the order. At this point, I am not sure which ones I have read...so, starting from the beginning and reading in order erases any confusion.

I'm in a 4-5 month long queue for this book at my library! I'm debating whether or not I should just give in and buy a Kindle copy.

message 9: by Mollie (new)

Mollie | 15 comments When I googled it, I noticed that disk world has subcategories. Are we reading by date or by category?

I am in the queue at my library, too!

message 10: by Noel (new)

Noel (noel-brady) Great challenge! I've read two of the Discworld series - The Color of Magic and Small Gods. Really enjoyed them and kept meaning to read more but other books kept calling me away. I feel bad now that I didn't read more before his passing.

message 11: by Heather (new)

Heather | 571 comments I dusted off my old copies yesterday thinking it would be nice to reread.

I've some books t read for next week; I'll start in 10 days or so! I'll follow you closely.
Do they have a "reading order"?

message 13: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Have you all seen this about reading order:

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I've decided to read in publication order.

I thought about series order but I would like to experience the evolution of the series and as I have read them all before, I am prepared for the fact that some of the older books are very different.

I think this challenge will take me a few years. I'm 30 in 2 years - would be great to finish by then!

I love The Colour of Magic but many say it isn't the best to start with. I would personally recommend Wyrd Sisters as a fantastic introduction to Discworld

message 15: by Paulfozz (last edited Mar 20, 2015 10:51PM) (new)

Paulfozz | 1001 comments Fortunately they are quite quick books to read even though the paperbacks can be quite thick; compared to some writers I find Pratchett's writing very easy to absorb, and other than re-reading parts for sheer delight I've never found myself needing to re-read sentences to work out what he meant. With some writers I find myself doing that constantly!

I agree that Wyrd Sisters is a far, far better starting place than The Colour Of Magic, though it was my introduction to Pratchett (thanks to a teacher who lent me the book) and I loved it at the time. Now I find the first two books quite clunky and formulaic, but they definitely have that spark that sets them apart from the usual fantasy fare.

I love The Colour of Magic. Its one of my favourites. I fo think it makes more sense if you have read other Discworld novels and get the sense of humour. I just love Twoflower and the concept of tourism. And the reaction of the ankh-morpork citizens to inn-sewer-ants is just so clever.

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments This a great challenge Heather! And a wonderful tribute to Terry Pratchett.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished The Colour of Magic yesterday. I definitely enjoy it although it will never reach the top of my favourites list.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Have you seen this Heather?

Link here

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

No, I hadn't. Thanks for sharing! Might have to visit

message 21: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I was wondering whether you would! LOL! Though they may get painted over quite quickly. There was some absolutely beautiful graffiti art under a railway bridge near where I live, and it only lasted about a week before it was painted over and became a rather grimy blank wall again :(

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished Book 2 The Light Fantastic today. Here is my (short) review :https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished Equal Rites yesterday. it was the first introduction to one if my favourite characters, Granny Weatherwax. I loved this re-read and would recommend this one as a good Discworld starting point- its short, funny and gives a good intro to Pratchett's work

I love stories about witches! I think I'll take your advice and read Equal Rites.

message 25: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments My hold for the first book The Color of Magic (in Kindle edition) has just come through. Looking forward to it ;)

Equal Rites sounds good too.

Equal Rites is a good start, I think. The Wyrd Sisters is probably my favourite Discworld and follows on from Equal Rites (although they can all be read seperately).

Enjoy Leslie! Feel free to comment on here if you would like to

message 27: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I have finished The Color of Magic. I agree with your comment that while it was definitely a fun read, it isn't going to become one of my favorites from the series. The Luggage was a hoot though!

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

The luggage is such a brilliant concept! I love Twoflower as well and all the links such as the in sewer ants

Twoflower reminded me a bit of Carrot Ironfoundersson - things always turn out right for them!

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

I have let this challenge go recently but will carry it on in 2016, hopefully a bit more energetically!

message 31: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments You can just move this thread into the 2016 folder if you want.

I ended up buying a paperback copy of Reaper Man (and some other books) with my Christmas gift card so I need to get Mort out of the library soon!
