The Heavens by Sandra Newman - 3* - My Review

This is an unusual story about a woman who has difficulty telling the difference between dreams and reality. It is a love story between Ben and Kate. Ben’s family has had a history of mental illness, and he worries about being unable to handle Kate’s issues. Kate worries that she is having an adverse influence on Ben. She views her dreams as real and believes she has influenced the course of history. Is this historical fiction? Is it a time travel narrative? Is it alternate history? Is it political-social commentary? Is it a story of mental illness or are these things actually occurring? There are elements of each, but to attempt a full description would involve spoilers. I think it will appeal to those who enjoy a story that gradually unfolds and have patience for some very strange interludes. I liked parts of it and found other parts frustrating, especially the tedious segments set in the distant past.
