Just finished a wonderful 2-book series, The Hild Sequence 1) Hild, and 2) Menewood, by Nicola Griffith. Long, and absolutely fantastic draftsmanship, creating an entire world from a brief mention of St. Hild in an 8th century manuscript. She makes up this Hild, who is a king's seer, a warrior, friend, lover, mother, guardian of her people, and avenging angel.
Nature is brought to the fore as an essential character as well, and I relished living in it. But perhaps best of all are the relationships of the women, and getting a taste of what real life was like long before the Medieval Period.
