What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I'm looking for a book series, I had to read the first book about 2-4 years ago for class, but I can't remember the series now. The first book has a green cover.

The main character is a male. He is sent to either go through the dangerous woods, or to fly over it, I can't remember. He's trying to get to this egg and at the end he gets to it, and the people in the castle that the egg is in get killed by the person that went with him and I think he ends up killing the person that brought him to the castle, and that's where the book ends.

Also I can't remember if I'm getting books mixed up, but I might not so I'll just put this here. This may or may not be a part of this book, it might be another one. A girl comes to live with him in the city that he lives in because they've known each other and they know someone in common. Later on, she has to help him at an event and either plant or diffuse a bomb, I'm not really sure which one because it's been a while and I read a lot of books.

Mackenzie, is this book series for teens or adults?

Who sends him on the quest to find the egg? Near the beginning of the book, does he believe the egg could either save or destroy the world?

Can you tell us more about the main character (his age, etc.) and this dystopian world (is it future Earth, etc.)?

Is The Fire Within the first book? It is by Chris d'Lacey and part of a series called The Last Dragon.
