Vicki (rdrlady) | 214 comments I read One Deadly Eye by Randy Wayne White, newest mystery in the author's Doc Ford series. I believe there are also several mystery series in which the medical examiner is called "Doc."

I'm going to read Not a Happy Family by Shari Lapena (Grumpy!) - it's been on my TBR for awhile, and it fits nicely with this prompt. Trying to get back in the groove of reading along with the challenge as well. So hopping in on week 34 and here to stay through December. :)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments I read Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman (Sleepy) by Haruki Murakami, a collection of 24 complex and otherworldly short stories. Each story straddles the fine line between dream and reality, a notable theme found throughout all of the iconic author's stories and novels.

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 393 comments I read A Young Doctor's Notebook by Mikhail Bulgakov for this one after stumbling across the morbidly funny TV series featuring Daniel Radcliffe playing...well both into and against type. The book is not quite as funny, but still very absurd, as one would expect from the author of The Master and Margarita.

chysodema | 137 comments For this prompt I read Wake Me Most Wickedly, which is a historical romance that's a loose retelling of Snow White, with the male hero in the Snow White role. At one point he's rescued by a group of small older women who echo the various dwarves. This book is really interesting because it delves into a little-known part of history, the history of Sephardic Jews and Ashkenzai Jews in 19th century England. The Sephardic Jews were well established and more respected by gentile society, and the Ashkenazi Jews were seen as poor immigrants, so while the two communities tried to support each other, there were also a lot of tense dynamics at play around respectability and assimilation. The author really knows her history and uses these romances to illuminate unknown parts of history.

I'm not really into fairytales, or retellings, but the twists in these sound interesting. Especially since my father's side of the family is 100% Ashkenazi Jew! I'll have to check it out.

Liz Alb | 117 comments The book I read certainly wasn't a happily-ever-after Snow White story, but it did have a doc(tor).

This is a novel of historical fiction, but also a shocking and gut-wrenching depiction of how the establishment (American government) intruded on and violated the reproductive rights of African-American women and children across the country back in 1973. It is based on actual events that occurred in Montgomery, Alabama during that year.

Hard-hitting, emotional, and eye-opening.

Readers agree that this is a 5-star read, as do I.

Claire | 21 comments After the fact, I think I am going to use The Mysterious Benedict Society. Mr. Benedict has narcolepsy and frequently has spells, so it worked well that I didn't have a plan for this category!

Anne | 307 comments I will be reading The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle as it sounds like a book about making people happy.
