The Girl Who Sees by Dima Zales
Read: May 13 2024
Rating: 4.5 stars
Review: This was a fun read. New to me author,
Sasha is an iilusionist and she wants to be the first famous female illusionist. Lives in NYC with 2 roommates and she works for a hedge fund researching and predicting stocks that will be profitable. She is doing table magic at a restaurant and a TV exec see her and books her for a TV appearance. She suffers a panic attack on stage. From that moment her life changes and she sees things she has a hard time believing are real.
Great writing. Well flushed out characters. There were necromancers, vampires. Will definitely be continuing the series.

Review:
It's never really quiet in the Winchester family. Bay and Landon are debating names for the new puppy. Terry and Winnie are starting to plan their wedding. Family meals are as theatric as ever, and Aunt Tillie is hiding yet another secret. Terry, Landon, and Bay are called to a fire, which turns out to be magical in origin, at another inn. During the investigation, they encounter a greedy real estate agent, a newly forming banshee, a fire demon, and a new corporation trying to buy up inn in the area. Another fun read in the series.

Review:
First off, I love the narration of Luke Daniels. He does a phenomenal job of changing up voices to give each character their own unique voice. I don't buy a lot of audiobooks, but this is one of the few series where I make an exception because the narration truly makes the stories comes to life.
Beseiged is a collection of short stories that take place in a multitude of settings over the course of Atticus' life. Atticus explains why he avoids Egypt after being chased by gods from the Egyptian pantheon when stealing a scroll for one of the Irish gods. He battles a demon to help a sheriff during the California gold rush and another group of demons when he and Granuiale visit a carnival in Kansas. The final two stories explain how Owen and Atticus end up traveling to save the tasmanian devils from extinction and set the stage for Ragnarok in the next book of the series. There are also 3 tales by Owen, Granuiale, and Perun that were so so. By far my favorite tale was "Goddess at the Crossroads" where Atticus meets Shakespeare and they go witch hunting together with their adventure providing the foundation for Shakespeare's famous witch scene in MacBeth.
Hearne does an amazing job of weaving a wide variety of settings and historical people and events into these stories so seamlessly that they seem plausible. Taken all together the array of stories over Atticus' life give a great overview of who Atticus is, and of course Oberon as always makes me laugh with his antics. 4.5 stars

* For vampire(s), read a book found on one of these shelves: GR vampire, GR vampires or SOS vampire

Review:
Hazel is a delightful character, who doesn't let her lack of magic keep her from doing what she believes is right. She's refreshingly honest in a world lacking honesty, and she's loyal to those who she considers to be her friends and family. While she is cautious of other types of supernaturals, she still forms an opinion of each individual based on her interactions with them instead of stereotypes.
The world created is interesting, but only vaguely developed in the book. The plot lacks cohesion. I'm sure the author has a lot of great ideas based on the hints dropped in the book, but it feels unfocused overall with too many underdeveloped plotlines. I'll keep reading the series because I enjoyed Hazel, and hopefully the world and abundant plot lines will make more sense as the series develops. 4 stars

Review: I can't believe the ending of this book. Riley and her friend Iris were trying to have fun but instead turned out to be a wild crazy mess. First being stabbed by some crazed person and then finding out that your something you've only read in books. Then she has to figure out how to fix something she doesn't understand and with a group of others that have been waiting for years for her. I really enjoyed this story.

That's awesome but being a Marshall was not what I was expecting but enjoyed this story and definitely going to read the next because I need some more fun with this team and of course Cait and her dragon. Cait is going to be quite being with her new position and family responsibilities as well. Sounds like we have a kicking witch here. Fun!

Pestilence by Laura Thalassa

Review:This was an interesting read. The Four Horsemen come to earth to reign terror. This is the first in a series of four. This is about Pestilence who comes to spread the plague to all humans. Sara is a firefighter is selected as one of the people to stop Pestilence. Pestilence ends up eventually falling for Sara. I liked the setting which is the Pacific NW which I am very familar with. Writing is good, story flows nicely. Will probably continue with the series.

Review: Another enjoyable story. Cait has a lot going on in this book and you need to pay attention. So much is happening in this book with her job and what’s happening with her family that you can get lost. All the characters are are a great bunch and you can easily see that she’s finding that she’s herself as being part of a great team.

Week 2 Vampires
Misfortune Teller by Dima Zales
Fits: found on SOS Vampire shelf
Read: June 3
Rated: 4 stars
Review: I am really enjoying this series. This is 2nd one and it carries on right where #1 finished. Sasha discovers she is one of the Cognizant. She is a seer. She is trying to find out more about her birth family as she had been abandoned in JFK airport as a babe. Sasha is trying to determine if her parents had been Russian. She ends up meeting Baba Yaga - a witch, but it doesnt seem that she is Russian. There is great writing and just a nice flow of events - never feel like you are just rehashing the previous novel. Definitely continuing with the series.
