Just returned from a Dymocks lunch where the guest speaker was Dervla McTiernan. She was interviewed by Dinuka McKenzie. It was very enjoyable. Dervla was so nice to listen to with her beautiful Irish accent and she had some fun stories to tell.
This may sound very indulgent but tomorrow I am going to morning tea on the Queen Elizabeth which is currently in Sydney Harbour. Also arranged by Dymocks.

Carolyn | 9855 comments How wonderful Phrynne! It sounds like Dervla McTiernan was a joy to listen to and I'm sure you'll absolutely love morning tea on the Queen Elizabeth (hope you're going to wear your best frock and hat!)

I will try and remember photos. Not that I will be in my best frock and hat. Just normal clothes - the ship is in dock after all! We get a chance to have a tour as well which I am looking forward to. Let's see just how posh the staterooms are!

How was it today Phrynne?

Excellent. Such a big ship!!! I have done quite a few cruises but never on something so big. I would be nervous of catching Covid or something if I did an actual cruise.
Anyway the morning tea was obviously delicious, we had a talk by James Bradley and a free copy of his book Deep Water: The world in the ocean
Some nice freebies from Cunard too.
I will post a couple of pictures later.

Shows how big she is if you know how large the Sydney ferries are!

This is the entertainment area where they have functions on board and where we had our morning tea.

Wow! It looks pretty amazing! Freebies definitely a bonus :) Glad you enjoyed yourself.... and I agree about the amount of people who fit onboard, and the heightened risk of catching covid..

Bradley's book isn't even published yet!

Yes he said another four weeks before publication. He must have given away at least 50 copies today and signed them if you wanted as well.

Yes a string quartet while we were eating. It was all very pleasant.

PattyMacDotComma | 3306 comments Just saw that a mini-series of Kate Atkinson's great Life After Life is going to be on ABC Saturday evening at 7:30.

Four parts, narrated by Lesley Manville. Of course it's not on iView yet since it hasn't aired, but you can see a blurb and the cast list and get an idea.

PattyMacDotComma | 3306 comments Until April 12th, SBS on Demand is showing "The Quiet Girl", the beautiful Irish film adaptation of Claire Keegan's highly acclaimed (and much-loved) novella, Foster. The film stands alone, but if you've read the book, you'll appreciate how well they did this.

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 2308 comments Thanks Diana and Andrea for letting me know about the The Three Musketeers films at the French Film Festival this year - we went on Sunday to the double bill and it was fantastic!! It was really cool to watch it play out in its original language, and it was fairly faithful to the books I love so much.

Highly recommend if anyone else has been thinking about it!

Haha I was happy to have a 15min intermission between films, that's for sure! But the sparkling wine and French snacks on arrival wasn't so bad either. :)

Carolyn | 9855 comments I usually ignore recommendations from Goodreads because they're not very useful, but this one is quite bizarre:

'Because you enjoyed Black Wolf (Antonia Scott #2) by Juan Gómez-Jurado Black Wolf:
المخلوق by سند راشد دخيل المخلوق', a book written in a language I cannot read (no editions in English listed).

It's weird that the algorithm Goodreads uses to recommend books doesn't take into account the language you read in. Black Wolf is translated from the original Spanish into English, but that still doesn't mean I can magically read an Arabic type script!
