You can read the group book at any time during the month and at your own pace. This is the pace the group will be using, but if you read ahead or will be giving spoilers, please mark them (click the "some html is ok button"). If you have any questions a mod or another member can help you.

Read through Chapter 2. A bit of a slow start but helpful world building as the social hierarchy seems rather complex. Don't love that they are colonizers and obsessed with bloodlines and caste. Hopefully that gets shaken up a bit.

Tau is an unlikely hero. I'm waiting for the shoe to drop to get him to the rage part. I assume it will come from Lekon because he is utterly awful. Interested to see where this goes and hoping for more dragons.

I'm 30 pages in, still in the Prologue and there are too many names being introduced on top of new terms we're introduced to but barely explained, so that's already overwhelming. I hope it improves with the high rating this book has.

The prologue is definitely confusing. It's maybe not as important to catch the names as to understand some of the magic and society concepts. After the prologue is over a hundred years later and more focused.

Today was a very necessary recuperation and read day so I got fairly far into this one, through chapter 12.

(view spoiler)[ I like Tau but I think he has gone a bit too far in his blind obsession to get revenge. It is more of a systemic issue and Kellan seems to have done his best in his position and not as much to blame. Odili isn't blameless though. I worry that Tau is going to get others hurt in his blindness to the bigger picture.

The nightly visits to the underworld to fight demons are insane and I'm waiting for him to fully lose it.

I love Zuri and think she is understanding the bigger picture of being a colonizing people and the costs the elite are willing to pay to stay elite. I hope that Jabari comes back but hopefully not as a necessary fight (maybe in the melee). (hide spoiler)]

Finished this one, just in time to start Iron Flame.

The story is brutal (view spoiler)[ as Tau is transformed from a beloved kid who wanted to marry his crush and have a quiet life into a weapon of rage and revenge. Tau went a bit too far for me, completely blinded by his revenge to the point of missing the bigger picture and putting the current friends in jeopardy. I am very intrigued as to what will happen next. (hide spoiler)]

I'm just starting now and I've only read the prologue, but it started off quick and bloody! I will probably not be back in this thread until I'm done because the temptation is too strong to read other peoples thoughts 😂

Prologue - Chapter 1: (view spoiler)[So far, I'd say I am more confused than intrigued. The book landed us right in the middle of the war without giving the readers even a basic lay of the world or the social heirarchy. I am still not completely clear on all the terms being used, the different castes among the kingdom are a bit baffling too. I am hoping it picks up soon and the author also is a bit more forthcoming with information (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 1-2: (view spoiler)[Umm this is all making me a bit uncomfortable ngl, all the talk about races and castes is getting a bit too much and for a second I found myself wishing that the Hedeni actually do have gifts in order to make the Ohemi realise their grave mistake. Lekan sounds like a horrible character and a possible villain in the book so far, the murders were brutal. I am liking Tau's romance with Zuri tbh (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 3-4: (view spoiler)[Makes sense that Tau's father's unnecessary killing would bring about the rage in him but I was not expecting Jabari to banish him for attacking Lekan. I am glad he is dead. The casteism in this book is in every interaction that Tau has with anyone and I am so very angry on his behalf. I hope Zuri waits for his return. I am curious to see what trials Tau goes through in order to make Ihashe (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 5-6: (view spoiler)[Tau has been blinded by rage at this point it seems and I fear that he does not turn himself evil in his quest for vengeance. Zuri would play a crucial role in keeping him grounded imo but I am disappointed that their reunion wasn't as hopeful as I had deemed it to be considering she is now a gifted and him a lesser Ishashe initiate. With castes being as important as they are, I am worried their love would suffer a death (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 7-8: (view spoiler)[Huh who knew that everyone was made to believe that a child between a noble and lesser was always born stillborn. I am hating all this discrimination in the book , plus it is so very brutal for my taste with all the fights, skirmishes and deaths. I definitely would not have finished this one if I was not invested in finding out whether Tau would make it into the Queen's melee and would Jayyed succeed in his dream of achieving peace between Ohemi and Hedinis (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 9-10: (view spoiler)[I fear that Tau is losing himself in his blind need for revenge. By the way Jayyed explained it doesn't seem like Kellan was much at fault for Aren's death but doesn't look like Tau is open to hearing reason. Zuri's role is as critical as ever in helping Tau realise that he is putting not only himself but his whole scale, his sword brothers in dangers by what he is set out to do. I am also eager to see Tau's reunion with Jabari and hoping they don't turn enemies (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 11-13: (view spoiler)[Damn Tau is losing it no doubt. The peace negotiations have started though which is a good thing i guess. I hope Zuri returns soon to talk some sense into Tau because I am afraid he'd lose his whole scale before he realises the gravity of the situation. I am also worried what his defeat to Scale Osa would do to this mindset. I hope he doesn't turn his back on his friends (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 14-15: (view spoiler)[Damn I never could have imagined the royals would plan to betray the Queen herself and thwart the peace negotiations too, can't fault the Hedinis for hitting back in this situation. I am just pleased to see that Tau saw reason and is fighting as a group to defeat the traitors and save the queen now. Zuri did end up playing a pivotal role through it all like I imagined. I wish Jayyed had survived this fight too (hide spoiler)]

Finished: (view spoiler)[This was such a roller coaster of a read. That coup at the end was the most taxing of all and like Tau, I too feel exhausted reading about so much loss of life and love. Watching the woman he dreamt of marrying and living a peaceful life with burn in front of his eyes must have taken such a heavy toll on him. Now though that he is the queen's champion I can only imagine the fury he'd carry within himself in the next book against everyone who took literally everything from him (hide spoiler)]
