Sodium.dia | 2 comments Hello all!

For a class I'm doing an information and people project on Goodreads. As a user if you can give any insights into these questions, it would be invaluable to me:

1. What do you think of the UX (design, user flow, appearance) of Goodreads? What is bad? Good?

2. How does Goodreads contribute to the bookish community? Is it effective at making a community or does it promote groupthink? Does it promote conformity? Is it problematic, and if so how?

3. Overall any features you would like to see added or improved on Goodreads

Thank you so much and I appreciate the time! If you have any other thoughts on the UX, IA, or social media aspects of Goodreads I'd love to hear them too

Emily (mugglemayhem) | 4 comments 1. I think the UX could definitely use some updating. It feels like I’m on a computer in the early 2000’s lol.

2. I think it does a great job contributing to the bookish community and do not feel like it promotes group think. If you go look at reviews and even just the book of the month chats in this group you can see there are always wide varieties of opinions. I think the bookish community as a whole is pretty supportive and open to people having different opinions on books. I think that’s part of what a lot of us like about the hobby. Obviously there are always outliers to that statement, but as a whole I feel like it’s a supportive community.

3. I would love more search facets, like being able to search by whether or not the books is part of a complete series would be great. I know I have other things that I want, but my mind is coming up blank right now 😂

Hope that helps and good luck with your project!

Samatha Goldsberry (sjgberry) 1)I agree it could use some updating, but I also like the familiar feel.

2) I think that goodreads has had a good effect on the bookish community to connect people that like similar books and by making suggestions. I think it promotes healthy community, I see a wide range of reviews and opinions, it doesn't seem to suppress or only show one type of review. I think the most problematic thing I have seen are unhinged authors when they get bad reviews.

3) id like more refined book suggestions after finishing one. I'd also like different way to rate a DNF book. I hate giving a book I didn't finish a 1 star, but I want to leave my thoughts for others that may find it valuable.

Haylee (haylees_bookshelf) | 12 comments 1. I think the overall appearance of good reads is ok but some features definitely need to be added/made easier to access.

2. I think Goodreads can be a good place to get book information, but you have to take it with a grain of salt. Part of it is because everyone’s opinion is going to be different about a book and the things that you look for is not gonna be the same things that others look for so you have to consider why someone did, or didn’t like it into consideration. I think Goodreads does contribute to people wanting to, or not to read some thing, but the primary recommendation sources usually from somewhere else.

3. I think good reads should add half readings. I think they should also make it to where you cannot write a book before it was released to because a lot of people will just write some thing good or bad just because they do or don’t like the author or the particular genre. I also think they need to update where you find giveaways as someone who uses Goodreads on the app and website, you have to search giveaway and then click on a bunch of stuff to find stuff you’ve already entered in or just a regular giveaway lists. It’s very irritating to have to go through that process just to look at the giveaway section.
