Do you keep a book journal and, if so, what do you record?

message 2: by Ann-Marie (new)

Ann-Marie | 19 comments I tried a digital planner 2 years in a row and didn't stick with it so this year I started a physical journal and I have loved it so much I am setting up my 2024 journal now. I cut quite a bit of the yearly things I included this year but I have a master list of each book I read, date, rating, pages, genre & physical/ebook/audiobook. I also did a bracket challenge for my favorite books each month and my books in /r/fantasy BINGO. Finally I have been tracking series I want to read and my progress. And since I am a total nerd I also keep a spread sheet since it is easier to update my journal looking at that since I do not always add books immediately.

Random (rand0m1s) | 1252 comments I don't do a book journal, but I do kind of tea journal. I keep notes about what I drink, how it smells, how it tastes, what it makes me think of, and similar. It really helps me know if I want more in future purchases.

I'm not the journaling type - keeping track on Goodreads is enough for me :)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 308 comments I don't quite make it a journal, mostly because reviews are only done on GRs, but I do have a spreadsheet that I use to track a lot of information about what I read:

Average Books/Hours per Week
Average Pages per Book
Average Audio per Month
Total pages & hours read/listened to for the year
Male or female author
How many Paper/Audio/E/Library/Owned/Audible/TBR books
What Genre
If the book is from a series
If the book is Canadian
If the book is a Giller Prize nominee
The date published, in 6 categories
Star ratings (the spreadsheet highlights 5 star reads)

I also track my series more specifically but it's not as organized. I should probably try fixing that.

I track on Goodreads and typically write a few comments (I hesitate to call it a review), but I also keep a Google Sheets spreadsheet. My spreadsheet only lists title, author, date I finished it, and my rating on a 10 point scale. Starting in 2023 I also tracked which prompts the book might fit in the 52 Book Challenge and the Better World Books challenge.

Ditto.

I don't keep a journal per se. But I do have a spreadsheet where I record everything I read (including highlighting titles that I particularly like), and I do record what I read in Goodreads and in Storygraph.

I tried using Storygraph & found it kind of unwieldy. But I know so many people who use it & love it. Maybe I should give it another try. Do you have to use a computer or will it work OK with an iPad ?

I use it from my computer, my iPad, and my phone.

Good to know. Maybe when I have a shorter “ToDo” list, I’ll investigate it more thoroughly. Thanks!

Cheryl (cherylllr) | 390 comments I was given a delightful notebook, custom printed with "So many books, so little time" from a member of my irl book club. I only use goodreads for journaling! I love the notebook... but what can I do with it?? Help!
