Tami (tamicarvallo) | 6987 comments The librarian manual says "Short fiction published online (the format should be "ebook"). Shorts that belong meet all of the following requirements: Published online as specified short fiction (i.e. not a 'bonus'), including standalones shorts published on the author's own website" https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...

My questions are

1 - I know that shorts/extras published at the back of a specific book edition (that's part of a series) are not valid, but what about those that were first published that way and then they were released online for free by the publisher in a pdf. Would they be valid then?

2 - What about short stories published as a "first glimpse" into a book on publisher's sites (no registration) but that are not included in the published book. Are they valid?

Tami (tamicarvallo) | 6987 comments Thanks Dobby. I asked because of this series of shorts I posted about here https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... in case anyone wants to see live examples :)

The Reader | 11 comments I agree with you, Dobby. I am bumping this, too, as I'm curious to know what should really be.

The Reader | 11 comments I think both will be valid book items, but this seems to be a policy matter that needs confirmation. I see posts marked with "Attention: Jaclyn" on the title that are quickly responded to; maybe that'll speed things up for you, too, Tami. Cheers (",)

Thanks for the ping! I just returned from holiday and am working through a couple of other things. I'll look into this and reply over the next week. 😊

No problem, Jaclyn. Welcome back :)

Semilico | 1826 comments I'd be interested in this as well.

I even have specific examples, that are unclear to me:
There are requests for "Extended Epilogues" (e.g. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...), that I would say they are "Bonus" or "Extras" and you have to sign up the newsletter to download the PDF, but they aren't distributed via the newsletter. (https://grace-reilly.com/bonuses)

Based on the "i.e. not a 'bonus'" Part and the newsletter tie in, i would count such as "Non book items", but i would appreciate some clarification in that regard

Dobby (dobby0390) | 7859 comments If you have to sign up for a newsletter to get the story, it's not a valid entry for Goodreads.

Sorry for the slow turnaround here, I had to unexpectedly take leave during January. My thoughts:

1 - This PDF should be a valid edition. PDFs are fine to add. However, as Dobby later clarified, this will not be valid if you have to sign up to a newsletter to access it.

2 - For short stories published as a "first glimpse" into a book on publisher's sites, I'm unsure if this would be considered "published", and seems to be the same as sample chapters (if I'm not misunderstanding). I can't find any rules surrounding these, but I'm leaning towards these not being valid.

Open to everyone's thoughts on this. 😊
